Strengths: Size, price, features
Weaknesses: Firmware, tech support
Summary: The initial installation went smoothly then I made the mistake of following the manufacturer's recommendation and upgraded the firmware. That rendered the device useless. After five days, multiple emails, two phone calls, 45 minutes on hold and and hour with a support person on the phone we were able to resolve the problem and it is working fine. The router itself is pretty slick and has nice features. I don't anticipate any more problems. I couldn't rate it higher because of the tech support. Although the rep I worked with stayed with me until we got it fixed, you will need to be very determined to make connections with them.

Weaknesses: configuration VPN support reliablility
Summary: To configure this router is a PAIN. Modifying every single parameter causes this router to reboot.
After rebooting the network transfer speed becomes very low (about a few kb/s), so it has to be switched off to work properly. Unfortunately, there is no power on/off button on this router (no reset button either), so the power cable has to be pulled out than plugged in to make this router to restart.
The real problem is the VPN support. I couldn't connect to a Cisco VPN server using the Cisco VPN client using this router, which would be vital for my work. I have tried the windows version, and the linux version too, but in vain.

Strengths: Great product
Summary: I tried a linkseys router first and could never get it to work. Bought the di 604 and I had it up and running in five minutes. Great for beginners and experts since it has many advanced features. I have had it running for about two weeks now with flawless performance. I have two computers connected to it and I get great speed even when both are in use at the same time. Can't believe they can make such a great product for such a low price. I paid $29 for mine after rebates. I highly reccomend this product to anyone who wants to share a internet connection between two or more computers.

Strengths: Awesome Security features, Very Fast, Very Inexpensive, Small footprint
Summary: This dsl/cable router has features coming out its ears. I am not sure how they are able to make such a good quality product for such a cheap price, they might even be losing money on this. I am very impressed with the security features like MAC/IP/URL filters, a bunch of firewall settings, and the stateful packet inspection. For example I can ground my kids from using the Internet and in about 30 seconds I can restrict their computers from the Internet. I can also filter out URLs using keywords for further parental control. The setup for this probably took about 2 minutes when using the setup wizard. I could probably go on all day, but I'd just like to recommend this to everyone who likes to have control over their Internet connection and would like to be a little more safe on the Internet. Plus you can't beat the price compared to ANY other 4 port router out there.

Weaknesses: Speed, Won't connect to switches, Security
Summary: When downloading at >200Kbytes/sec from >20-50 sources simultaneiously, the device freezes up. The http control pages become inacessable. During this time period, the device also sends though packets from explicitly firewalled soruces.
If data is recieved from or sent too many different sources very quickly, the device resets and reboots the cable modem, which does not occur when the comptuer is connected directly to the cable modem.
The routing comands for opening external ports limit the total number of ports to be routed to about 20, and require this to be one port at a time, as they do not allow opening a range of ports.
When connected to a switch with two or more computers on it, the device becomes confused and starts randomly dropping connections.
Firmware upgrades help none of these problems.
I reached this page while trying to find an adequate replacemnt which will preform the way a cable router should.

Strengths: Works, inexpensive, cool looking, well documented with good user interface.
Weaknesses: You have to insert the little rubber feet yourself.
Summary: I really love this little router. Easy to set up, very well (though not perfectly) documented, cool looking. It works, out of the box, with virtually no intervention. And when I did want to customize it a bit, e.g., to share files over ICQ, activate FTP, and stealth a port, the necessary information was readily available on their web site, and crystal clear. The only problems I had were that when I went to change everything to static IP's, something most won't do, I had to play around for a few minutes to get them to take -- they don't say in the documentation that you have to leave the DHCP on, reset, etc. -- also, they should have chosen a slightly more compatible default gateway IP/range -- it can be changed, but not all users will know that. But most users won't care about this stuff: they'll plug it in, type in a URL, click on a wizard, and be up and running.
Did I mention that with the rebate, it cost $0?
As I said, I love this little router . . .

Strengths: Ease of setup & low price
Weaknesses: None that I can think of off hand
Summary: Extremely easy to setup. Using Windows XP and XP Pro the setup is nothing more than plug it in and use it. Didnt even need to run the software. XP automatically identified and set it up. Hooked up all three PCs in the house in just minutes. I use Bright House's Road runner service as my Internet connection and everything is working together smoothly.
My local CompUSA store had the unit on sale for $19.99. I was considering the D-Link DI 604 or the Linksys BEFSR41. Both are supposed to be good routers but the best price I could find at retail for the Linksys was $39.99 at Best Buy. It was the sale price of $19.99 at CompUSA that sold me on choosing the D-Link in the end. Glad I bought it.
I'm a online gamer as well as a web surfer and I have no trouble playing my games (DAOC & Horizons) or surfing the net. I would reccommend this router to anyone thats interested in a good low cost router for their home network.

Strengths: Easy setup, so easy it only took minutes to set up! AND its cheap??! :-D
Summary: (Edited June 28th by chris563) This baby works so good and to top it off, after a quick setup, the other computer that I am sharing my dsl connection with, I did not have to do anything to it so it could get online. It just worked. And my computer doesn't have to be on for the other to be, just the router. What dream! Who knew networking could be this easy :). And both computers I cannot detect any slowdown in speed :). Thanks D-Link. :D

Weaknesses: Some people might miss calling tech support.
Summary: This D-Link DI-604 has everything you need for a home or small network. I had it up and working in minutes. I found it extremely easy to change any settings I wanted. It has a firewall and filter that blocks just about every kind of internet attack as default, yet you are able to easily configure it as you wish. Please note, just because something is small it price, doesn¡¯t mean it is small in features. I would highly suggest buying this product.

Strengths: Easy to setup and administer; Many, many features; Inexpensive
Summary: This device is great. I was able to obtain mine for $25 after rebates and it is definitely worth more than that. It was a breeze to setup and everything was working within 5 minutes of opening the box. The numerous filters, settings, and customizations that it allows one to play with are nice for the advanced user. For the beginner, however, it comes nearly ready to go and one would not have to change much if they didn't want to. The actual device is quite small (4-5 inches across, 3-4 inches deep and one inch high), and is only mildly warm after two months of continuous use. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a very affordable router for 1-4 computers.

Strengths: seems to do what is supposed to.
Summary: After calling the tech. support line, of course it was not a 800 number, 30 min. later the tech had me going through programs that eventually froze up my computer, first the mouse stuck in the middle of the screen, then the key board stopped working. i complained to the tech what just happened, he suggested I call Microsoft to solve this problem and suggested my computer had problem prior to the tech. removing and rearranging programs. I should have known something was up when the tech. was getting into areas he said " I don't understand how we got there."
After speaking to a supervisor, he also confirmed, YOUR COMPUTER WAS HAVING PROBLEMS BEFORE, CALL MICROSOFT, MABY THEY CAN HELP.
After our computer repairman came in to repair the damage I had been instructed to do, the wireless mouse & keyboard still will not work, and $150.00 later we have a connection to the net. It seems that the tech. had me remove un-necessary ip's he said we did not need for the DI-604 to work.

Strengths: Quick to setup, little or no administration
Weaknesses: Dropped WAN connection, became more and more frequent
Summary: It took a while to find that the source of the dropped cable internet connection was this D-Link DI-604 problem with it's WAN port. I had to power-cycle, reset and even upgrade the firmware whenever it lost the link with the cable modem, the router will work sending/receiving packets for a moment then the same problem occurs again. It would been a great router if it wasn't for it short operating life.
