OfficeMax to Install ADT'S Sensormatic(R) Anti-Theft Systems Chainwide
BOCA RATON, Fla., June /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ADT Security Services, Inc., a unit of Tyco Fire & Security, today announced it has been awarded a contract with OfficeMax(R) to install its Sensormatic(R) Ultra*Max(R) anti- theft systems in all of the retailer's U.S. locations.

OfficeMax, which operates nearly 1,000 stores in the United States, had previously installed Ultra*Max anti-theft systems in 400 of its locations. The office supply retailer decided to expand the technology to all its stores, after initial results with the technology proved positive, allowing for a chainwide source tagging program.

Source tagging is the process whereby anti-theft labels or tags are applied to merchandise during the manufacture or packaging process and shipped to retail locations already protected against theft.

"One of the benefits of source tagged products is that they can be merchandised out in the open instead of locked behind glass. This has had a significant positive impact on our sales," said Harold Mulet, executive vice president-retail stores at OfficeMax. "For example, sales in one high-theft product category increased 30 percent through open merchandising with source tagging."

Mike Snyder, president of ADT Security Services, Inc., said that source tagging has proven its impact on store operations beyond its traditional role of controlling theft.

"Source tagging offers retailers a way to better display and merchandise high-demand products without increasing the risk of theft," Snyder said.

"Investments in Ultra*Max anti-theft systems can be justified by more than just shortage reductions. Retailers are seeing increased sales due to the merchandising flexibility source tagging affords."

The chainwide roll out is expected to be completed by fall 2004.
