Based on 802.11b and Proxim's Wireless Outdoor Router Protocol Delivering
20-40% Faster Performance
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Proxim Corporation (Nasdaq: PROX), a leading provider of high-performance
wireless local area networking (WLAN) and wireless wide area networking (WWAN)
products, today announced the Tsunami MP.11, a new family of economical
wireless outdoor point-to-multipoint solutions enabling campus connectivity,
security and surveillance, and residential last-mile access.
The Tsunami MP.11 product family includes two subscriber units - an
Enterprise Subscriber Unit for businesses and a Residential Subscriber Unit
for homes. The product family also includes the Tsunami MP.11 Base Station
Unit, which can connect up to 100 Subscriber Units of either type.
The Tsunami MP.11 base station, when paired with the Enterprise Subscriber
Unit, offers a reliable 11 Mbps solution customized for businesses, campuses,
schools, hospitals and other enterprises needing WAN connectivity. When paired
with the Residential Subscriber Unit, it becomes the ideal residential last
mile access system. The Tsunami MP.11 products are targeted to provide value-
oriented connectivity for customers not requiring additional carrier-class
features provided by Proxim's Tsunami MP and Tsunami MP Active Interference
Rejection (A.I.R.) products. Tsunami MP.11 can be used in conjunction with
Proxim's carrier-class Tsunami point-to-point and multipoint products that
offer speeds up to 960 Mbps total capacity for large-scale deployments.
"Tsunami MP.11 fills the need for low-cost, reliable multipoint products
enabling applications that previously would have been too costly to deploy
with wireless technology," said Kevin Duffy, senior vice president and general
manager for Proxim's WAN Division. "For instance, Tsunami MP.11 is an ideal
choice for businesses and schools that need affordable campus connectivity and
security and surveillance. Also, it enables community service providers to
provide affordable residential wireless Internet access."
Tsunami MP.11 is based on Proxim's Wireless Outdoor Router Protocol
(WORP), which is designed to deliver 20-40% faster performance than existing
outdoor router solutions. It is a modern architecture that supports 802.11b
radios today and 802.11a and 802.11g radios in the future. In addition, WORP
supports Asymmetric Bandwidth Throttling, which allows adjustments to the data
rate users receive and send. This enables service providers to offer
differentiated services and pricing for business and residential customers.
Ideal Campus Connectivity Solution
The Tsunami MP.11 offers the advanced features required by business users,
making it an ideal choice for smaller campus networks. Tsunami MP.11 offers a
complete set of features that provide best-in-class performance, management
and security. It provides up to 11 Mbps data rate with an integrated 2.4 GHz
radio and a range of up to 10 miles. Tsunami MP.11 also offers advanced
management capabilities including planned compatibility with Proxim's Wireless
Network Manager. Security is also a key concern for businesses, so Tsunami
MP.11 supports reliable security solutions using Radius authentication and
access control, and WEP.
Affordable Security and Surveillance
Previously, outdoor wireless security and surveillance deployments were
only an option for customers with deep pockets. With Tsunami MP.11 and a
network-ready camera, it is quick and easy to set up a simple security
network. This allows schools and universities to monitor activities on campus,
smaller businesses to secure inventory in warehouses, and shopping centers to
protect customers in their stores or parking lots.
Complete Residential Access Solution
The Tsunami MP.11 product family includes a Residential Subscriber Unit
that provides everything needed for a residential deployment, including a
customer installable "indoor" window antenna, for an estimated street price of
under US$300. By offering a low-cost Residential Subscriber Unit, service
providers can now deploy wireless networks across neighborhoods for the lowest
possible investment cost and without a truck roll.
"Proxim has been long been recognized as a leader in the point-to-point
wireless market," said Daryl Schoolar, In-Stat/MDR Senior Analyst. "Our
research has shown that most service providers have been looking for a CPE
with a magic price point of $300 or less. Not only does Proxim's new Tsunami
MP.11 meet that goal, but it also provides a migration path for future
upgrades to new technologies and standards as needed."
Pricing and Availability
Tsunami MP.11 products will be available in March from Proxim's extensive
network of worldwide distributors and resellers.
The Tsunami MP.11 2411 Base Station Unit has a list price of $995. The
Tsunami MP.11 2411 Subscriber Unit has a list price of $595 and the Tsunami
MP.11 2411 Residential Subscriber Unit has a list price of $395.
Proxim is also announcing an OEM program for its Wireless Outdoor Router
Protocol. Customers interested in OEMing complete systems, boards, or software
should contact Rob Jansen at rjansen@proxim.com.
