Product Description

One of the most anticipated titles in PlayStation2 history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the original PlayStation. Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, is back, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns. Also, like Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.

Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound is also topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makes this game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewhere between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest. --Raymond M. Padilla

  • Another Great MGS Game.
Probably my alltime favorite video game franchise with the exception of the Madden football games. The original Metal Gear was one of the first games I owned for the old Nintendo NES. And even though the kids today would go back and look at that game and laugh, it was still so far ahead of it's time with it's concept and plot twists.

This game is the equivalant of watching a great Hollywood action movie. Cutscenes do get a little long on here even more so than on MGS 1 but it does tell a great story with tons of twists. Something about the Metal Gear games remind me of the show "24" or should I say "24" reminds me of Metal Gear. I have to think the creators of "24" had to be Metal Gear fans since the show deals with some of the same issues such as treason, corrupt government officials, conspiracies and never knowing when someone you thought was an ally is selling you out. And you must admit Snake is a bada$$ just like Jack Bauer.

The only reason I'm knocking a star off of this rating is for the same reason that so many other reviewers have. Having to play 75% of the games as Raiden. Huh! Come on! Not being able to play this game as Snake and instead playing with the wussy punk Raiden would be like "24" replacing Jack Bauer with that guy from "High School Musical". I just don't understand why they did this. I must admit when I started playing this game and realized this it was like finding out there was no Santa Claus. Once I got over the initial shock and disappointment though, the game is still great and hard to put down....more info
  • Hyper-realism marred by too many cut scenes...
MGS2 is one of the best selling games in existence because of the type of game that is it. This is a counter-espionage game that relies more on your ability to conceal yourself than running around the place blasting the hell out of anything that moves (which you can do too if you want). For this reason the game becomes very realistic and the graphics and sound are all too genuine and do not make you feel anything less than actually being there doing what the character is up to at that point in time. The world that you are immersed in has rain, sun and smoke and bad guys patrolling the area. You have both hyper-realistic 1st person views and a third person overhead view as you run around the place. The amount of moves and their combinations are staggering and the actual movement of the character is unparalleled by any game of it type. Watch as you throw your character over a railing and move along the pipe with your hands while dangling over a huge ocean. Let go and watch in horror as you fall to your death. Amazing! The plot is coherent and there is plenty of story to boot but.......... the game design itself is terrible, terrible, terrible.

MGS2 is by no means a disaster but unfortunately tries too hard to be a movie and less a game. The truth is that the vast majority, over 85%, of the game is spent watching video clips instead of gaming which is really what we want to do and is the reason why we bought MGS2 in the first place. There are so many video sequences in this game that all of the above suddenly crashes back down to the reality of holding a controller and watching the television screen as some video plays itself out. Sure you can skip it, but then two minutes later you find yourself back holding the controller and watching yet another video.... argghhh.... The other two major disappointments is that the game only takes place in ONE LOCATION - an oil rig, but it is huge! The other is that there are far too many calls and dialogues to go through on your communicator. Fans of the series may also not like the fact that the main protagonist in the first game has been replaced - however this is acceptable and does not detract from the experience.

In short this is one of the most hyper-real games that you will ever play - the graphics are nothing short of stunning and the character moves are out of this world - but it is all marred by the terrible amount of video clips that you have to sit through. In short this detracts from the overall gaming experience and you will soon get bored with it. Play MGS2 -- ONLY -- if you have the time and the patients to sit through a three minute video every other minute of game play....more info

  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty review.
Metal Gear Solid Sons of Liberty starts off where the first one left off. I'll talk about 5 aspects of the game, graphics, gameplay, story, controls, and voicing.
Graphics, you'll first notice, are unbelievable. They are stunning. They are crisp and crystal clear. Metal Gear Solid is really pushing the Ps2 to its limits. There's not much to say, they are near perfect. Graphics 5/5.
Gameplay, is good. It offers a great game if you like watching cutseen after cutseen. Come on, is MGS a movie or a game? Yeah, cutseens roll the story along fine, but there are to many and they are to long. You'll finish watching a cutseen just to walk ten feet and find yourself in another cutseen. Some conversations, like ones between Rose and Raiden, are absolutly meaningless. Gameplay gets a 4/5.
Story, well its Metal Gear, what do you expect. It starts out interesting and understandable. But, as you progress it gets weird. There are alot of twists, in it, that really will keep you stunned. Story 5/5

Controls is probably where the game could have used some work. You eventually get used to them but they do take practice. Maybe its because of the camera that gets in your way, that messes up the controls. I wish Konami could have done a camera like the one in Resident Evil Dead Aim. Controls 3.5/5
Voice acting is almost perfect. It matches up with the motion of the mouth and looks good too. Its just that sometimes during the Codec the voices get ahead of the motions of the mouth. But thats it. Voicing 4/5
Over all Metal Gear Solid SoL is a very worthwhile game. It has an engaging story, lots of shoot em' up action, and eye popping graphics. This is a must buy for any Ps2 owner....more info

  • i hate raiden...anybody with me?
i played and worshipped the demo of this game right into the ground. i was in awe of all the pictures in the magazines, and when i picked this game up and started playing it, i about wet myself. the beginning is excellent. solid, perfect gameplay. snake is a badass and everyone knows it, even he does. ocelot is still a jerk, but a cool one. the beginning cinema blew my socks off and i couldn't get enough of it. eventually i ended up getting in a scuffle through a cutscene showing the new metal gear "rex" tearing the whole tanker i was on apart. then it screeches and dives into the water. but what about me? am i dead?

then there's the rest of the game, and the worst secret in the history of gaming unveiled.

as the next cutscene unveils, i can't wait to see what my good buddy snake is up to now. now he's supposed to go kick some metal gear ass, right? well, some of that is correct, all except the part where i get to do it all as Solid [...]. no, the game sticks me with a [...]named Raiden. maybe, just maybe, if Raiden didn't have those girly golden locks, then maybe he wouldn't be so bad. but he does have the girly golden locks, and i [...]. soon after taking control of him i find the quickest way to kill myself, hoping that maybe this is just some joke Kojima pulled an when i die i get to be snake again. but no, i'm stuff with the barbie/ken combo named Jack/Raiden. oh well, so i proceed in playing with him. soon after, i get hints that mr. snake is on board, and i hope he's come to kill my [...]. nope, he's doing the other badass thing and sneaking around whilst killing gaurds.

off the subject on how much i hate Raiden, the gameplay is great. the graphics are excellent and the action is awesome. the new enemy characters are cool, if somewhat reminiscent of past bosses. but in the end you find out why. the story is a little, or maybe very much convoluted and relies heavily on politics. this doesn't entertain me nearly as much as infiltrating Shadow Moses island and chasing Liquid Snake around, but it's not bad. sometimes i got lost, and never really found again, but i didn't care. overall, the game is nearly perfect. except for the strange plot and stupid main character Raiden, it's great. Snake does end up saving things in the end, sort of, so that helped out a bit. i liked getting the sword at the end of the game, it made me feel like the Ninja from the first game for psone, Gray Fox. and i could deflect bullets, too. and eventually i could unlock stealth mode and i didn't have to look at raiden anymore, which was a big plus.

after the tanker with snake, you spend the rest of the game exploring the "Big Shell" in the middle of the ocean. the overall look can get a little boring at times, seeing as everything has the same backgound. but it's not enough to take away from the game. the bosses are neat, but they are never really a challenge. the game isn't all that long, like the first one, and a second run through would only take a couple of hours. my first time through this game with no help whatsoever, took just a hair over nine hours. i was impressed with the overall package, but i still can't stand Raiden. i'm sorry that i bring up how much i hate him so often, but if you are like me and think Solid Snake is the coolest guy around, then you will feel the same way. if not, then sorry for being repetitive.

so all in all, a great game, even if you can't follow the plot. the gameplay is water-tight and the characters (except raiden) kick ass. so buy it if you're a metal gear fan, but get ready to hate a certain blonde guy real soon....more info
  • Great game, but too easy
This is one of the greatest games of the year I played and beat every single MGS. But when i played this one it was very easy even on hard. Overall this is a great game and a must have for all MGS fans....more info

  • solid game play!!!!!!!! followed by a solid story!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes by now!!!!!!! you know i own this game , i love every moment of this game , i don't care about the long dialoge it somehow appeal to my intellectual vanities, the cut scences were teriffic a little to much at times but the game play makes up for that, i felt pupose plying this game and at times i really felt like the real thing (whatever that is ha ha ha ha!!!!!)xbox may be powerful but Ps2 , will always come out on top because!!!!!! it's just that good i have not played the game cube as yet but so far i love my ps2 i am a true nitendo fan , i am now experimenting with diffrerent types of game consoles i love the ps2 even if its the weakest out there , it some how uses it strenght to its best avantage, i can't wait to play metal gear 3 laterzzzzzzzz gamers!!!!!!! ...more info
  • Fun, intelligent, sleek, and stealthy: my kind of game
Old-school revival has become quite popular nowadays, and this movement owes its foundation to Konami and Hideo Kojima. With the release of the first Metal Gear Solid, after a 11-year hiatus from the first Metal Gear on the NES, a new era had come to pass in video games. Like its NES brother, MGS was one of the first and only games to emphasize stealth rather than brute force in its gameplay. It short, it offered something different from other action/adventure games, and earned its praise. Now comes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. I didn't get very far in this game, but being my first MGS game, I was very impressed. First of all, it couldn't have been released at a better time: right after September 11. It's a pretty patriotic effort on Konami's part. Except for the fact that he smokes, Solid Snake is one awesome character, and certainly earns his status with Mario, Sonic, and other groundbreaking giants of the industry. The game opens up with the Tanker chapter, which is very well done. I had to study up on MGS 1's story to get the story of this game, and I gotta tell you, it's the most complex storyline I've ever seen for a video game. It would make a great movie plot. The gameplay is fantastic. It takes a rhetorical approach, as you can go through the entire game without killing anyone (pull out your M9 tranquilizer pistol), except for the bosses. Holding up Russkies (their voices are dead-on) never gets old. The only complaint is the second chapter, the Plant Chapter. Raiden is a bit of a baby. But overall, MGS 2 is a great gaming experience, and has gotten me hooked on the spy thriller genre.

    FINAL SCORE- 9/10...more info

  • A little overrated but gaming wise not so bad.
What is quite possibly considered to be the most overhyped PS2 game of all time thus far (the only thing that stands above it is Final Fantasy X) actually turned out to be one of the more disappoint titles. For what it's worth however, MGS2 isn't quite that bad of a game on it's own and while Raiden turned many American gamers away it's no reason to say the product is bad. The game is still fun if you ignore all the cutscenes. Eventually you'll get used to Raiden as well.

    Graphics: 5/5

From the get go it's easy to see where MGS2 get's a lot of it's fans. The graphics as for any game, make for OUTSTANDING eye candy in the aspect that for one, graphics actually DON'T slow down the gameplay and two, it's nice to see just how much work was put into it. I didn't really see anything wrong with the graphics. No glitches really or anything blurry that wasn't supposed to be.

    Sound: 4.5/5

The other aspect of MGS2 that gets it a nice score. You'll LOVE the music especially the opening cinema. You'll also like the sound effects and the fact that everything has a reaction and makes its own sound. However, there are moments where sound is absent and I mean BGM. This isn't really a problem but in areas that are intensely lit with guards roaming around I need a sense of feeling to the atmosphere.

    Gameplay: 4/5

Sure there are many moments where you're actually watching the game but unlike some games MGS2 allows you to skip the scenes. But that's the con here: There are just TOO MANY cutscenes. While you can skip them, the first time through the game is actually no fun unless you have a major interest in the storyline. I did, until the end. The cutscenes are too long and go on about irrelavant things that don't matter. Also a lot of the time we're watching "Codec" scenes which you can also skip.

But putting that aside it's funner than it looks to play MGS2. You sneak around and hope not to get caught by the enemy. When you are you must quickly hide. It sounds mediocre but with the vast amount of items you get and several ways to dodge guards and with the difficulty settings placing more around you'll find that you may need to develope some strategies at times.

Now the issue of this "Raiden" character. I don't feel that Raiden should bring down the gameplay. I can do all the same things with Raiden that I could do with Snake so either way I could still have fun. While Raiden didn't have Snake's attitude this didn't affect my gameplay much at all. I'll admit I didn't like Raiden much either and I'm sad that so many gamers let this small thing ruin the gaming experience for them.

    Story: 3/5

This is being nice to the story. It really deserves a bit lower but because of the wide-amount of plot twists the game had it gets it a three. MGS2 has some of the greatest plot twists I've ever seen but the problem is that the story doesn't come together the first time through. I fully understand this storyline after playing through it twice. The plot twists are great but don't come until the end of the game and when they do there are far too many to keep track of them. When you actually understand the storyline it's actually pretty weak however.

    Replay: 4.5/5

The rare moments where a game scores considerably higher than the gameplay score. When you get the story in check then it's great just to replay MGS2 to do stupid things like take pictures with the camera of some things, or just to play around with the guards. Also, MGS2 provides difficulty level settings which help replay as well. Play the game on Very Easy and then jump to Extreme and notice how insane the game gets. Plus, there are secrets you can unlike through replay which is also fun to do.

But replaying for those secrets may often times become repetative and/or Tedious.

    OVERALL: 4/5

While Raiden turns American gamers away the game is still pretty fun. The plot is a drag but the gameplay is really what saved this game in the long run. It's easy to see how people could like it, and it's also easy to see how people could dislike it. If you've been with Snake since the NES days it's easy to dislike Raiden but for a game MGS2 doesn't fair too badly....more info

  • New Metal, New Gear and New characters
Metal Gear Solid is sure a pure gem but It has a few flaws.
    Lets get started shall we.
Now first of all. WHAT THE HELL IS RAIDEN DOING HERE. Alot of people had a problem with Raiden being in it. I'm not...I mean it's Metal Gear Solid For crying out loud! Metal Gear Ray is awesome. Not as good as Rex though....The plot was a little confusing at times and I was annoyed by the Kodec...ON AND ON...JEEZ when does Raidens Girlfriend NOT call.

    Lets start shall we

    Graphics....5/5
The graphics are great. Very welldone. The Enivermont desighn is fantastic. Great job...

    Gameplay....4/5
TO MANY CUT SCENES!!! MGS 1 HAD MORE GAMEPLAY THEN THIS!
And this game is wayyyy to short...Takes about 5 hours to beat..It took me about 4 hours and 34 minutes..But I skipped most of the cutsences....And I hated the way the ending was...I would have liked it more if it was Snake Vs Ocelot in a metal Gear ray boss battle...More better from my opinion then Raiden Vs Abunch of Metal Gear Rays.

    Sound...5/5
    Superb..Music is great..

Overall Mgs2 doesn't quiet Match up to the Original MGS which Alot of people think is the Greatest Adventure game ever made...I think so to.

If the question...Is MGS worth buying the answer is..YES.
This game is still a classic and one of PS2's Stronger points.
Not as good as PSX's original Metal Gear solid but one step below. But MGS3 will be the best MGS ever!

So go out and buy this game if you really like MGS and don't be turned off by the game just Cause Raiden takes the place of the Legendary Snake who happens to be in the game for about 45 to 50 minutes...Still it's a great game...Haven't played Substance and don't on planning it either...

    4.5 out of 5..

    Overall it's a great game

  • One of the Best Games Ever
GREAT GAME! STUNNING GRAPHICS!!! Sometimes I just feel like staring at the screen and admire the graphics, although I'm being killed by bad guys. The plot is crazy, but, despite that, it actually seems to make sense to a certain degree. It also has great replay values, so definitely buy this if you like replaying games (like me). I think I spent a total of over 40 hours playing the game. Ok, stop reading reviews and buy the game. You will see what I mean....more info
  • Best ever???? I doubt it!!!!
OK, I like these types of games, but I feel that Metal Gear Solid, and Hitman II were 2 games that didn't live up to all the hype.

However, I have to be fair:
This release of Metal Gear Solid II is a pretty cool game, way better than the previous MGS game, and it offers the player some really cool moves, and cool gameplay...No doubt...but, I would have like to have spent MORE TIME PLAYING the actual game, than watching all the LONG, drawn-out movies throughout the game! It gets old, really fast! Every 3-5 minutes you're watching yet, ANOTHER video clip or movie....JEESH!!!

While not my favorite military-type PS2 game, it's a decent game, fairly cool to play, but doesn't really deserve a 5-Star rating, in my view....more info

  • Boring!
Way too many cutscenes and babble, not nearly enough game play. It's ultimately very boring....more info

I got this as a gift for my younger brother. He was so happy when it arrived because it completes his collection of MGS Games. This came in good condition and kept my brother occupied for 3 hours or so....more info
  • FANTASTIC!!! GREATEST VIDEO GAME EVER!!!
This is a fantastic game! It takes a while to get used to (some aspects are a little strange at first), but you will grow to love everything about it. The plot, though incredibely complicated is amazingly crafted and will blow your mind. The gameplay is amazing-the controls are tricky at first, but once you master them you have more control than with most games. The graphics couldn't be better. Besides MGS3, I haven't seen better graphics for PS2.

The bosses you fight are great-from Vamp, an immortal vampire to Solidus, a clone of Snake bent on taking down the Patriots to Fatman, a crazy bomber.
Also, you use some awesome weapons which you can pick up along the way. Some examples are the M4, M9, AK-74u and socom.

For the first tiny section of the game, you play as Snake, the protagonist of MGS1. Then, as a twist, you play as Raiden, a young, somewhat androgynous soldier with a dark past for about 95% of it.

After playing this game once, I decided I prefered MGS3. But after playing a again, I've realized just how great MGS2 is. It's more than just a video game. It is a truly captivating story, with an incredible plot and engaging characters. It encompasses philisophical issues and conspiracy theories while remaining a very fun game to play.
By the end, you will have gone though an amazing journey and you'll feel completely satisfied with the story's ending.
I cannot reccomend this game enough. I don't know how to explain how fantastic this game is. Simply play it....more info
  • Good, but a little short
MSG2: SOL was one of my better buys, I have to say, but if you're looking for a game that takes time, look to a different game. Sure, the storyline is great, but I beat the game over the weekend, playing for a maximum of about 4 hours. I also hate this new character Raiden. He is a whiny little brat who can't do anything for himself and for the first 30 minutes of the second half of the game, you are constantly calling the Colonel, and I don't want to waste my time with that. I have to give Hideo props though. He came out with an amazing storyline and a really intriguing look on the US government. The graphics in this game are great, and you can do a lot more things with your character than in the first Metal Gear Solid. Overall, this game is about 3 stars of 5. All I can say is that my cousin's better give me back the first Metal Gear Solid because the first one is a lot better than the 2nd one, lengthwise and it keeps you hooked. If you're looking for a game that has action and adventure and isn't just about blowing crap up, I suggest you rent this game, see how you like it, and then seriously considering buying it....more info
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty ::Spoiler Free Review::
First let me start by saying that this is the worst of the three Metal Gear Solid games. While many have said they thought the plot was excellent, I thought that too many things were left unexplained, even with the fact that there was going to be a third game. While the gameplay is more fun than the original and the guards are much more intelligent, it still can't best Metal Gear Solid or Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Personally I also thought the characters were better in the original. I prefer FOXHOUND to the new terrorist group myself. Anyway, this is still an excellent game, and well worth owning, but if you want to play a better Metal Gear Solid game, with Sons Of Liberty's gameplay, I suggest you buy Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for Game Cube....more info

  • This is one of the best Ps2 games of all time
Many people while they may say this game doesn't stack up to the other games in its series, I think differently. When being skeptical about this experience, there's not much you can point
out that's really negative. However, the main reason people didn't enjoy this as much as the others was because of the young, blonde-haired, kid, Raiden.
Actually, I find that once you get used to change, it really doesn't matter that much, in order to introduce Raiden, a brand new character, you wouldn't have the slightest clue about his past existance and Raiden's style of motion and techniques resemble almost identical to Snake's, other than the awkward cartwheel that Raiden does. But then again, it's just my own opinion.
The storyline is without a doubt some of the best I've ever seen. Not only does it provide a strong emotional dialogue, but it has an odd and unique twist of an ending, especially if you wait after the credits.
One of the main aspects that can't be arguemental, is that the graphics are richly stunning, filled with great architecture, colors, and facial expressions. Graphics like that can still compare closely to Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater.
The sound is not any different, having voice overs that sound greatly accurate to their roles and music that either raises action or a calm and gentle tune.
Gameplay factors are still very good, exactley the same as any other Metal Gear game in the franchise, but still very well-done.
The only thing I believe that will never change is the long cinematics. So much of the time it'll be just like watching a movie, with not a lot of game time. You may have played the 1st or 3rd games, but this has the cinematics with the most length.
Once you realize that after playing for a bit, you'll know this isn't a game to play with 5 of your friends, and since it gives off a serious mood to it, overall, the fun factor won't be at it's highest. The gameplay itself gets repetitive very quick even though you get a sword, there are some funny things you can do,(such as: get a guard to pee on Raiden's head over the building, kiss a poster, toss a magazine on the floor so the guard will stare at it) it gets old and playing it again really isn't worth the replay value.
Overall, it deserves a well earned, 5 out of 5 stars....more info
  • The Ultimate Sneaking Game
Out of all the games I have played in my life this is my favorite. The use of movie style cutscenes and stealth gameplay help to created a amazing and addictive game. Well lets get down to it there are two parts to the game the Tanker chapter you play as Snake and the Plant chapter you play as Raiden, a new character for the Metal Gear series who has all the same moves as Snake. The game does have some new features for your character such as first person view shooting, rolling, hiding in lockers, using disquises, and the jump out shot which is a very cool and unique feature for the game. While you have some new tricks up you sleeve so does the enemy, the enemy can now call in renforcements when they spot you the attack teams will use shilds flips kicks or whatever means necessary to take you down. The enemies are actually quite smart if they spot a dead guard or a blood stain they will call in reinforcements to search the area so its best to hide the body in a locker or something, aside from this the enemies know when they are being shot at and during gunfights they take cover effectively. The graphics for this game are amazing, in my opinion this game has the best graphics than any other PS2 game. There is also some new weapons to the arsenal, some weapons from the original Metal Gear like the SOCOM pistol and the NIKITA Missle launcher you may reconize but there are new weapons like a greande launcher, the USP pistol and a M4 and a Aks-74u. hile the game has a load of cutscenes they are essential for telling the story most you can skip but the first time you play the game you will want to watch them the second time you can skip through all of them. If you are a first time PS2 buyer or just never played the Metal Gear Solid saga I highly reccomend you get a copy of this game, trust me you wont regret it....more info
  • Amazing!
I don't understand what everyone complains about. It is perfect. Those who say that the stiry is too complex, should have stayed in school, because not only is it a very intersting story, but it is not a story that one should become baffled by. Also those who don't like the movies are crazy. These movies yes are long, but are absolutely stunning. Really they aren't "vital" to the story, but yes they help. I would rather watch these outstanding movies than watch real movies, they are that darn good. I had no trouble with the controls, or camera angles. I believe that the people who review this game and disliked it were looking for a shoot-them up mindless game. MGS2 is , key word, STEALTH game. the more people you have to kill in this game the worse your score will be. And instead of sitting around all day and killing waves of brain dead enemies like in other games, MGS takes stratagey.
