Everyones making a mad dash to dig up buried looot in this all-star comedy riot. Studio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 08/05/2008 Starring: Spencer Tracy Jonathan Winters Run time: 161 minutes Rating: G

Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). --Tom Keogh

  • The Funniest Old Movie EVER!

  • Very Funny
I remember seeing this movie when it first came out at the movie Theater
Purchasing this DVD reminded me just how funny this movie really is. This movie was made in 1963 and over the years there have been few movies with the same theme but none of them and I mean none of them have come close to the quality of this movie. Like the old Hitchcock Classics this is truly one of Stanley Kramer's best Comedy Classics. So if you're feeling depressed or you just need a good laugh I reccomend this movie. A little slapstickish but truly a very, very well made funny, funny movie. If you like comedy you won't be disappointed....more info

  • It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad DVD
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World is one of the all time classic comedies. It may lose something in translation to the younger set who is used to far more vulgar comedy but this truly was a brilliant film for it's time. If anything, it gives people who have not seen the film an opportunity to witness some of the funniest comedians and actors of that era. A bunch of strangers played by an all star cast by happenstance find out about 350,000 dollars in hidden treasure and race to fictitious Santa Rosita State Park, Ca. to find it under a big "W". The fun of course is in what happens to them on the way. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes to laugh. Jonathan Winters was the Robin Williams of the sixties and the scene where he single handedly levels a service station is priceless. If the chase scene had an origin it was probably from this film. For it's time (1963) and without the use of computers, the auto chases and other stunts are amazing. To me, Mad Mad World is the comfort food of cinema. ...more info

  • One of the Funniest Movies Ever!
Not to be missed, this star studded film provides laughs aplenty as they search for a dad convicts stolen loot (350 Gees!). So many great lines, like Milton Berle about his brother-in-law "Be careful of him...he's not normal!"Or Jim Backus "Now I'll make some old fashions the old fashion way, just like dear old grand-dad!".Or Buddy Hackett regarding the bumbling air traffic controller "I don't think he's gunna help us!"For a long movie, every second is a treasure!...more info
  • Great cast at their best
What a treat to see the finest comedic talent that we will ever see together in a hilarious production. Each of these legendary performers are marvelous and none of them overact. There is no competition between them, but a wonderful blending of talent that is from the better days of entertainment....more info

  • Umm Love The Picture! This Edition well probably not.
I love this film an awful lot , i would like an edition with the cut scenes restored to the film like i have on my vhs version that would be nice i probably won't buy it until, because as i remember as kid watching the theaterical version it was missing something. so a couple of years ago when purchased the widecsreen with the extra scenes restore to film on vhs i was excited, it made me laugh so hard. i think mgm should do a two disc thing like the stargate and the abyss editions, that had both versions of the films in the case. it just make more sense to do that, you know,as i said. i would buy that edition , until then i will hold on to my dear vhs version of this classic which i love very much. this one film that you should'nt see unless it's in widescreen trust me.

    Highly Recommended Film Classic....more info
  • It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
This version of the film has been edited, leaving some of the nice little gags out, such as the man popping off Phil Silvers' steering wheel, and Mickey Rooney dumping water on Buddy Hackett in the airplane...suddenly the cut back to the scene, Buddy is wet but you don't know why if you haven't seen the uncut version before. This is not the version for the true fans of this flick. I don't understand why the company who transferred the film chose to cut out little funny scenes but kept the tedious intermission with it's blank screen and theme music...omitting this instead could have saved the original humour and flow of the film.

  • Looking for a Family Movie?
I bought this CD for my boyfriend, as he loves this show when it comes on TV, but it's hardly ever on. I had never seen it before, so I watched it with him and his 5-year-old daughter. I laughed so hard that I had tears in my eyes. And it was nice because we could all watch it together. Good, clean comedy like it used to be way back in the 60's. I will get more of these old movies....more info
  • Nothing else compares
This movie has a special place in my memories. My dad took the family to see it at he Cinerama Dome in Hollywood in '64, when I was about 10 years old. I thought it was funny then, but I have really gotten to appreciate it more as time has passed.

When it was made, every top billing commedian in the business was calmoring over each other to get into this film. It is a monument to all the great commedians of the time, a virtual curtain call of the great film and stage comedy acts of that great generation, almost a billboard lineup of the Vegas marque of its time.

Stanley Kramer, not your typical comedy director of that time, really got everything he could out of such a diverse ensemble of cast and supporting crew. Everyone who was anyone (especially in Vegas) delivered what was expected, and what we all want to remember from these fine commedians and actors. And what a great, silly, funny story!

I won't go into the plot - the reviews here cover that well. The thing to take from this is that if you want to see the greats from a lost era, and to really understand the sense of commedy of that time, the connection from stage, film, television, this is the movie to watch. If you were alive at that time, that's great - you'll get it easily. But, even if you were not this will connect you with those who were. The commedy is timeless, although some of the lines are firmly rooted in the time ("It's the only way to fly!").

I especially loved the difficulty of the fantastic stunts performed in this movie. The flying scenes were something you simply cannot see in modern movies - now they are all done through CG. Flying through the billboard, or through the hanger - these are just not something you can see in a film these days. Paul Mantz,I believe, was the stunt pilot, who was killed doing flying scenes for the original "Flight of the Phoenix" a few yeas later. Same with the driving scenes. The sequences with Sylvester trying to "come to mama" are amazing. And the sychronized driving scenes - the police cars circling around an intersection to arrive at a precise location at the same time - are fantastic. These things are just not done any more.

But the commedy of the movie is the lasting treasure. It is a compendium of times long gone, and it preserves the wonderful humour of my parent's generation, a much different time.

This film is well worth watching, and is totally enjoyable....more info

  • Mad Mad Video
A true classic starring virtually every comedic star of its day. It has aged a bit over the years, but still delivers a heaping good dose of whacy-slapstick-chase-comedy. I had to share it with my son. (Long ago, I saw it in "cinemascope!")...more info
