The Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 is optimized for Windows Live Messenger, which is used by the largest worldwide instant messenger community with over 200 million users. Three key features give you a superior Windows Live Experience. First, the Windows Live Call Button makes it easy to start a video call. Simply press the button to see who's online, and you're on your way to a video call. Second, with the LifeCam Dashboard you can access video effects and control your webcam from the Windows Live Messenger window. Lastly, with One-Touch Blogging, a single click allows you to upload to Windows Live Spaces, an "online scrapbook" that lets you easily post blogs, photo albums, and personal music lists.

The VX-3000's automatic face tracking software, which takes advantage of the camera's pan, tilt, and zoom controls, follows you so you don't disappear off-screen. Meanwhile, the camera automatically adjusts for low-light conditions for improved video quality, and a built-in unidirectional microphone with acoustic noise cancellation provides crystal-clear audio. Video effects give you a fun way to express yourself, and last but not least, the camera's universal attachment base fits on most monitors, including flat screens. Alternatively, the camera can sit directly on your desk.

Note that while the VX-3000 is optimized for use with Windows Live Messenger, Microsoft LifeCams also work with other instant messaging programs, such as Yahoo Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger.

If you want the next level of performance from your LifeCam, consider the Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000, which adds high definition video capabilities, a wide angle lens, a 3x digital zoom, and a high-speed USB connection. View a comparison of the LifeCam VX-3000 and VX-6000.

Customer Reviews:

  • Good Bang for the Buck
I purchased the Microsoft lifecam to replace a 3 year old Logitech. The Microsoft has an excellent picture as well as great sound transmission. We use it to talk to overseas relatives and it has the same audio quality as talking on a phone. Great cam for the money. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quality, reasonably priced cam....more info
  • Great Web Cam for the price
Bought this web cam based on other user reviews and I think it is a good product for the price range. I use it to talk to my sister in th U.K and I have had no problems with the camera whatsoever. Microphone is quite good for the size and picture quality is not bad. Wish the video resolution was a little higher than 640x480. Other than that, no issues, easy installation. For $25 you can't go wrong. I would recommend this camera to anyone who is on a budget....more info
  • Good Bargain
I've brought three of these web-cam's for family and friends back in North Carolina. It helps me keep in touch and cuts down on the homesickness. The picture on my end is somewhat grainy but I can live with it. It isn't bad. We use it through Gmail and haven't encountered any problems in the month that we have video-chatted. And we video-chat every two or three days. My parents don't have any trouble using it and they are not technologically adept at all. Both of us have Windows XP. How could I not love a product that allows me to see my family, especially the baby niece and nephew?...more info
  • Great Deal
This camera originally sells for about forty dollars on Amazon and I got mine for just under twenty-five. My software didn't have any problems running on Windows Vista and the camera works GREAT for Skype. I have a microphone in my laptop speakers but the microphone on this camera works much, much better than those. The picture is clear enough quality that my boyfriend doesn't feel like he's looking at a Monet painting though it is slightly pixelated. Overall, a very good buy and would certainly buy again. ...more info
  • Okay camera, bad software
The camera works fairly well but I tried the software on two different PC's running XP and it froze on both of them. Next time I will spend a little more and get a Logitech product....more info
  • Easy setup for Vista and XP
The LifeCam came with very good instructions and setup easily as per the instructions.

A friend of mine also got the same camera for her computer running XP and it setup in a breeze for her too. Mine is running on Vista Home Premium 64.

Camera picture quality is excellent but I do recommend having decent lighting around you or the picture will get grainy. It does have features built in for low lighting uses but they are limiting.

I use this camera with Google and Skype and it works great at both ends since my friend is using the same camera from her computer....more info

  • Great Web Cam
I wanted to have a web cam to use with our grandchildren. This was easy to install and very easy to use. All of our grandchilden can use this cam with ease. They range from age of 5-9 and have no problems placing calls. It certainly makes it nice to be able to not only talk with the grandchildren, but to see them. It has great sound and good pictures. Great for the price.

  • Superb equipment
This is one piece of excellent video equipment. I know because I am an artist. The audio take time to set up, but this is one cam you should get because there is no hype with this one....more info
  • Great image and sound!
This camera was SO easy to set up. The image quality was superb (so my friends say) and the mic worked flawlessly (when using Skype). The only downside was being force to download Windows Messenger Live before being able to use the camera. But I guess if I knew more about computers I could have avoided that step. Anyway... I am thrilled with it so far (just 2 calls of ~1/2 hr. each)....more info
  • Excellent Value for the Price!
We ordered this webcam so that we could chat with our family who are scattered all over the country. It's a great little webcam. It was easy to set up and we've discovered some pretty cool features on it. It's not the fanciest thing out there, but if you just want a visual chat with family or friends this is a great webcam for the price! ...more info
  • Microsoft Lifecam VX-300 (68A-00001)
This is a great lifecam! Clear and accurate visual with great speakers. What else can I say? It's Microsoft! I definitely recommend it to all webcam-lifecam fans!...more info
  • You get what you pay for
I own two of these and although I originally thought it was a good product, I no longer think that. This webcam is not supported under Linux and whenever I use it with skype, my friends and family always say that the image is out of focus and adjusting the camera focus does not make the image better....more info
  • Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 (68A-00001)
Works fine. Microsoft software is a bit hard to install and use. You have to 'think outside the box' to do it right and use it right. It takes about 1 frame (picture) a second and has a delay of about 1 second for picture and about a quarter second delay on sound. Otherwise we talk and see our grand kids in Calif from Ohio when both of us are on....more info

  • Mr Kevin Wenger
We purchased this as our very first webcam so we could commmuicate with our friends who now live out of the country. It was very easy to set up and install. Our fiends say that the video image on their end is very clear the sound is great on their end. It is nice for a little unit this size to have everything included, such as the built in mic. We are very impressed with this unit....more info
  • does the job- clip a little hard to use
This product does the webcam job well, and has some fun icons and animations that you can oeprate during your chat. Very easy software to install. The only downside is the clip, which doesn't grip well on the edge of my laptop, so sometimes it falls off or is lopsided... but it's an ok product for the money....more info
  • This is a great camera. Good value.
I shopped around quite a bit for this purchase and I'm glad I settled on this camera. Super easy to install and works like a charm!...more info
  • Not the Greatest
The drivers that come with it don't work on Vista, so I had to search for an upgraded driver, which was quite a pain. I eventually found one that did work on Microsoft. The description says it will work with Vista, and technically, I suppose it does, but it does not with what is originally packed in the box....more info
  • Great camera and sound...plug and play!
This camera has it all. Clear sound and image on both ends. Easy to install and use right away! I use this with Skype and am very happy with the quality and value. My parents were so impressed that they bought one as well....more info
  • annoying feature
This issue I have with the Microsoft camera applies to the entire LifeCam series. I use this webcam for my notebook and on Skype only. There's a big button on the top of the camera, that spot happens to be the exact place where you would put your finger (and the thumb on the bottom) to adjust the tilt of the camera. Since you can only adjust the angle of the camera while it's plugged into your computer, everytime you push that button while plugged into the computer it asks you if you want to install some sort of Microsoft software(feature). It really gets on your nerves since I take the camera off when not in use and everytime I turn it on I have to deal with this annoying button. I don't like how Microsoft is using this tactic to push their product down our throats. Otherwise the camera part of it seems to work fine....more info
