Customer Reviews:

  • Thule 686 on 2006 Honda Odyssey
Great product and very functional. It fit just right with the Ody's factory rack and cross bars. No need to buy extra hardware and the silver color matched very will with the Green Slate color of the Ody. A little penalty on gas mileage but more aerodynamic than the other boxes on the road. Very convenient as to, you can open the box from either side and you cannot pull the key if it is not latched properly....more info
  • After a few trips, here is our review
The Thule fits perfectly on our Honda Odyssey. Before the Atlantis 1600, we used a Yakima Rocket Box. The Yakima is very solid, made of rigid plastic, but we could not open our rear tailgate with the Yakima box. So, after reading reviews on Amazon, we decided to get the Thule. We have mixed feelings about the box. The fact that it installs VERY quickly, fits our Odyssey, has excellent practical space, and opens from both sides would have earned it five stars. But there are a few concerns that knock the score down considerably:

    > A piece of the mounting bracket (the part that sits on your roof rails) keeps falling off. It is held in place by a single screw, and it's made of relatively cheap plastic. I am able to put it back on, but thin plastic that holds the screw looks like it wants to eventually break (sooner rather than later).
    > The shell of the carrier is thinner and not as firm as the Yakima box. Therefore, at a nominal highway speed of 55 or 60 mph, the wind gets under the front lip of the box, and gives off quite a bit of wind noise. We may notice it more because we have a moon roof; but it is very audible with the moon roof closed.
    > The hinges on the box are made of pretty thin plastic. I admit they haven't broken, but inspection reveals that the hinges are starting to separate after just two months of ownership.
    > We drove through a moderate rain storm on the way back from Florida. A bit of water made it into the front of the carrier. I'm thinking that it must have made it in as the wind pushed its way under that front lip of the carrier.
    > Finally, the silver coloring (if you opt for that color) scratches VERY easily. Be careful when you take the box off and put it on the ground.

We still like the Thule Atlantis 1600 but wish the company had spent a little more time on quality issues. Would we buy it again? Probably not. I think we would look for a Yakima that fits on our Odyssey. We have had our Yakima Rocket Box for 12 years, and it's still rock solid. ...more info
  • First trip a dream
Used with a Volvo XC70 for our first camping trip of the year. Installation was a breeze (did it solo, but should have had someone help - did so for removal) and it performed excellent during the trip. MPG were only minimally effected - loss of ~1 mpg over normal levels. I was able to cram so much into the box that I had excess room in the car! The only issue I currently have is where to store it. Think about this before you buy one of these things - they don't just "fold up"! Bottom line: it did what I wanted and I'm glad I bought it!...more info
  • Great product, great price
We are very pleased with this cargo carrier. I was a little nervous about being able to install it without help from a local retailer, but it was not a problem. The peace of mind to have it securely attached to the roof, and locked, compared to the soft bags that you just lash down was worth the price.
We didn't notice any wind noise. We made sure the front of the box didn't overhang the front edge of the roof.
We loaded it up with 2 snowboards and boots and 1 pair of skis, poles and boots and had room to spare. ...more info
  • Excellent Luggage Carrier
Bought this from Amazon for a 06 Honda pilot. Does not obstruct the rear hatch and protrudes slightly over moonroof. Does not interfere with XM or navigation although mounts over the receiver. Easy to install.May need to adjust crossbars, which requires a simple Hex Key ( aka L key). No noise at all at any speed. Easy to access. Didn't care much, initially, for the straps inside to secure luggage but actually work fine. ...more info
  • Good product
I am very happy with the cargo box. Very easy to attach to your rack. Locking mechanism is well put together. No complaints. If I could change one thing, I would have gotten the next larger size. ...more info

  • Great product
Purchased for snowboards and gear storage and it worked great. Constructed well, locks, easy access from both sides, and easy to attach & remove from the vehicle. The only thing I would warn is that it is not quite long enough for skis, but as a snowboarder I won't mark it down for that;)...more info
  • Great product
I installed this by myself in less than 10 minutes on a Ford Windstar with no tools. The quick connect design is well done. I wanted a rooftop carrier that was easy to install and remove and that would last many years, and that is why I chose the Atlantis 1600. I loaded it up with 3 medium sized suit cases, a chainsaw, toolbox, and some other tools and still had some room for smaller items. Easy access from both sides, and it was easy to open and close. Some wind noise when traveling around 70mph but not enough to be a nuisance. I couldn't even tell I had something extra on the vehicle from a driving/wind resistance perspective. I also hit some rain on my first trip and the Thule kept everything dry. I guess my only concern would be how well this can withstand a rock impact while on the road, but that same concern would apply to all the hard carrier brands. ...more info
  • Got it Just in Time
The Atlantis 1600 arrived just in time for us to pick up our 3 adult children for a visit and some sightseeing in Arizona. I had it installed in about 10 minutes with only a little help from my wife getting it on top of our Highlander. I could and maybe should have done it by myself. I won't go into details, but it can be a one man job. ...more info
  • Attach system weak
I have both an Atlantis 1600 and an Atlantis 1800. Good boxes. Problem is with the attach system. While simple, it was probably designed by a Swedish monkey. The part that sits on the cross bar of my roof rack fails at the screw attach point. It is a very weak fitting and held in place by one screw. The monkey would tell you this is not a bearing point for load. Why then does it always fail in this spot?? Get this - the replacement part is $2.60 from Thule direct AND they want $20 for shipping... Now that's a business model! ...more info

  • Roof attachment system is cheap
I have had this product since last March and have been on a few trips with it. After removing if from the box two of the plastic "Thule quick grips" immediately popped off the box and had to be rescrewed on. They continue to pop off almost everytime it is placed on the roof. It is very frustrating and a poor system for attaching the box to the roof....more info
  • okay but wobbles
I installed this on my 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman. I can't position this as far back as I would like because of the antenna in the back. There is just a little bit of overhang in the front. At highway speeds, I can see through the sun roof that is wobbles, but it seems sturdy otherwise....more info
  • Camping for 5
I bought this version several years ago for our camping trips. I have a family of five and we usually take a guest or two. Very easy to install but is easier with two people just for lifting it onto the vehicle. I've used this on a Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee, and a Dodge Durango fitting it directly to the factory racks on each vehicle. It has adjustable mounts, opens from both sides, and locks onto the racks using four U-bolt assemblies with locking clasps. My only complaint would be the locking assembly has a rather cheap security clip to prevent the assembly from randomly popping open which actually takes a small bit of pressure anyway so the clip is just an extra precaution (this is a little orange/red clip - one of mine broke easily but locking assembly is still completely functional). I've never noticed any wind drag or top-heaviness from mine. I've also never had any problems with the unit sliding on the racks as the lock assemblies hold it firmly in place. I did however notice that my gas mileage was slightly better the first year we drove with the Thule on it as compared to the prior trip, but not sure I can attribute that to the aero-dynamic function of the unit.

Storage is great. On average, I can fit 5-6 sleeping bags, 2-3 air mattresses, one 8-person tent, 2 camping chairs, a pie iron, axe, and a small backpack into my Thule. That's ample room for the basics and with cautious packing I can do 5 sleeping bags, 2 tents, 2 air mattresses, and 2 chairs. A worthy investment for our camping trips and it hasn't let me down yet....more info
  • it's what yone would expect from it
Attaches well and secure to my minivan's existing cross-rails.Roomy enough for 4 large bags or 3 large suitcases. Looks like car extension on silver color car....more info
  • Great Rooftop Box
Amazon's delivery was fast, and there was no damage to the carrier. Installation was difficult on my Lexus RX350, but that was due to the size of my rack. Once aligned the unit functioned flawlessly, opening easily from either side. This is a well thought out design. Highly reccomended....more info
