About Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Features:
  • Compact stationary upright exercise bike with 8 preset programs and 16 resistance levels
  • Easy-to-read LCD monitor displays time, distance, speed, calories burned, and more
  • Extra-wide comfort seat with micro-adjustable fore/aft seat slider; 10 profile courses
  • Adjustable handlebars with integrated heart-rate grip sensors; bottom transport wheels
  • Adjustable cooling fan; 10-year frame warranty; 1-year warranty on mechanical and electrical

Customer Reviews:

  • Not off to the best start
I purchased the Schwinn 131 from Amazon for my wife. The box arrived very worn, dirty and slightly torn up during delivery. The shipping box damage seamed slight, so I decided to assemble the unit versus returning it.
Assembly was very easy although the cover to the base unit need to be adjusted as it must of shifted during delivery and was not seating flush. (Note: The Styrofoam base packaging was broken in various sections.)
The final step of assembly was to plug the unit into its power adapter. This is where things went downhill. The power plug receptacle was shattered at the wiring coupling thus leaving me no way of plugging in the power cord. There appears to be an internal quick connect for this piece thus I have ordered a new adapter from Schwinn and it hopefully is in route. Note, their customer service was friendly but when I sent my email information to the agent, she never responded to affirm my order. I had to call them back 24 hours later to confirm the order. (Perhaps a training issue)
Secondly, as I was removing the plastic base unit cover again, I noticed that one of the screw sleeves had broken off the cover. I have asked Schwinn for a replacement cover too.
At the point I am slightly concerned about the unit. It seems that this may have been a returned and restocked unit. Once I receive the replacement parts and turn on the bike for the first time, I will update this thread.
    Not a good start.

UPDATE Jan 5, 2008 - After a week of waiting for my two replacement parts, they finally arrived today. One frustrating point was that I received "NO CONFIRMATION" from Schwinn that my parts were in route, on order and they never could tell me the official plan to correct. The agent "guessed" on what exactly was in route. After some poking around with their customer service reps, I did find out they shipped a 31 lbs box my way. At this weight I expected an entire lower unit, but instead received what I originally anticipated. I received a lower right side cover for the base unit and a new power coupling.
Interesting that didn't even come close to 31 lbs.
I decided to NOT install the lower cover, as the replacement cover had NO decals or stickers on it. This would not match the left cover that is not broken. Not acceptable, but I can live with one less screw. Secondly, I could not easily remove the pedal brackets, so this made my decision even simpler. NOTE: Schwinn never answered my question on how to remove the pedal brackets.
The power coupling assembly installed with little problem (thank you Schwinn for the quick connect). It was a bit tight due to no ability to remove the covers entirely and I have big hands.
At this point the bike is correctly working and my wife is enjoying it.
NOTE: you need to install the screws to the base cover in order from top to bottom, starting at the seat base and working counterclockwise. Works best.
My wife is amazed how quiet the bike is. The fan is a bit noisy, but that is to be expected considering it's relatively small size. At least the computer and fan worked correctly. I had my concerns from reading other opinions.
I still believe the bike has good potential and I trust Schwinn. The price is average, but I am now starting to the see the Schwinn 130 on sale for $100 less from original price. Not sure if this Schwinn 131 will follow suit.
I don't think I will ever buy an exercise bike via MAIL ORDER again. I need the ability to return it at ease in the event of damage or defective parts. Freight and large transporting has it's inherent risks as well which I believe contributed to my experience.

  • Very Nice Exercise Bike
If you are looking for an easy to assemble, quiet bike, look no further. This bike went together very easy. It only took about 45 minutes to assemble. I use it in front of a large screen TV. During my exercise routine I make more noise then the bike does.

It clearly is not a racing trainer, or spinning bike, but it is very nice for the daily use I put it through. Lots of programs and levels to keep your training routine varied. Very happy with my purchase.

    Good Luck!...more info
  • Great Buy - Upright Bike
This bike is a great buy for the money. The assembly directions were clear and it went together easily. When it arrived, the box was pretty mangled and it turned out that one of the base supports was broken. I called Schwinn (owned by Nautilus) and it handled the issue very well. They were responsive and I had the replacement part within 3 days. Since then, I've been enjoying the bike - it has a lot of programs, good heart rate monitor, fitness tests and it is nearly silent during operation....more info
  • Great bike for the money
The bike arrived via super saver in 2 days and in terrific condition. All the parts were there and the bike was fairly easy to assemble.

I've only been using it for a few days but this bike is definitely the best option in this price range. The drive mechanism is terrific and the workout programs (including the heart rate-controlled workout) are above comparable bikes. It feels sturdy for an inexpensive bike and the seat is more comfortable than the Lifecycle 9500 at my gym. Anyway, if you have a seat style you like all you have to do is screw it on--it has a standard post.

Overall, a terrific buy. ...more info
  • Comparing Schwinn 130 with 131
Is the difference between the Schwinn 130 & 131 worth the price difference? Does anyone know if there is any qualitative difference, other than the greater amount of computer programs on the 131?
    Thanks so much!...more info
  • Good Value
    Schwinn 131 Upright Exercise Bike

Assembly is no more difficult than most children's toys, the features for use provide a wide realm of options, the footprint of the exercise bike is small and it is easy to move about. Most adjustments for individual use are by means of a large knob that I tighten securely; however my wife has difficulty loosening the knobs to adjust the bike for her use --- not a major problem, but a consideration for multiple users....more info
  • Bike arrived and console is non functional
I am frustrated because I have not had good luck with online purchased exercise equipment service in the past. I decided to try Amazon and a name (Schwinn) that seemed reputable. The packaging was a bit torn up but the bike seemed to be going together fine until it was time to plug in and go. The console is not functioning. All connections are right and yet...nothing. Now I have to wait until Monday for customer service. ...more info
  • Damaged Beyond Repair... Twice
I ordered this item last week, and the shipping was phenomenal. The free super saver shipping was super speedy. I ordered on Thursday and received on Monday!

And this is where the horror starts and ends. The outer box is a little war torn, but it didn't bother me too much. I opened up the package, and right off the bat all of the Styrofoam packing is smashed to pieces. This is where I started to worry after reading all of the other reviews on Amazon.com about the poor packing materials. The plastic shell of the base was cracked in about 4 places, and didn't even sit on the base correctly. The pedals wouldn't turn without rubbing, and something was rattling inside.

Within 5 minutes, and not even everything out of the box, I deemed it unworthy, and marched over to my computer to return it. Amazon gets one more chance with this item, then someone else will get my business.

I expect that I receive items in "straight off the factory line" perfect condition. I wouldn't buy a brand new car with a broken window, even though that window is 1% of the value of the car. If it was worth five dollars and broken I would return it. There are no excuses, just really bad reasons why something went wrong and someone must be accountable.

    -------Update----------

Received the replacement bike from the aforementioned return already ( 1 business day later ) and the bike came in the same condition as previous. BROKEN. Shipping box was beaten to death. Upon opening, didn't even have to take anything out of the box to see that it was broken again. Now I have to lug two of these back to the UPS store for return.

As much as I love Amazon, this is by far my worst experience with them yet.

Schwinn needs much refinement of their shipping process. The product is worthless if not delivered to the end consumer in perfect condition.

I'll be going to a local store to find my new bike. Probably not a Schwinn....more info
  • great bike
The bike was relatively easy to put together and is quiet and efficient. It seems to be durable enough for me and versatile enough for my wife. ...more info
  • I LOVE THIS BIKE!!!
I don't have really anything bad to say about this bike. I did not have any probs with the equipment being delivered broke or it not all being there. The bike was easy to put together, or at least my boyfriend said it was, and it did not take a long time to get together. When using the bike the different programs available are great to use and gives a great workout. Also the bike is very quite so it doesn't annoy you. Plus the bike is small enough so it don't take up to much room! I highly recommend this bike to others!!!...more info
  • It is fun, even without the fan
I bought the model 131 becaused the model 130 was only $10 cheaper and the 131 included the fan and more programs. I don't use the fan and would rather not have it (warning, you CAN'T remove it). My laptop fits perfectly in the magazine holder but the fan makes a little lump against the screen. Anyhow, I am VERY HAPPY with this model. Used to have an eliptical machine before and this is a lot more fun and also smaller. Trully recomend. I don't give five stars because the product can ALWAYS be better.

  • Think Carefully Before Purchasing This from Amazon
I purchased the Schwinn 131 bike from Amazon and it arrived in one week. The box was utterly destroyed and re-taped everywhere. The contents of the box (bike) were used and used heavily. Original styrofoam and packing material was missing, foot base has cracked in half. So, I returned it and promptly got a replacement in two days. The outside box was in a bit better shape, but the bike inside was heavily used again. Also, the replacement AC adapter prongs were bent beyond repair. The LCD was used and cracked. The parts literally would have had to have been thrown against a wall to be in this bad of shape. Totally unacceptable. Another 2 hours of time lost in unpacking and repacking. Taking my refund and going local. When you buy on Amazon they list used products in a separate area. After receiving two used, and damaged bikes, I honestly question what type of second hand goods they are selling as new. ZERO STARS FOR AMAZON. Very embarrassed to have been an Amazon customer up until now. Buy local and save yourself hours of headaches....more info
  • Showed up & worked like a charm
Was a little worried after reading other reviews of bad parts / super damaged boxes, super hard seats, etc, but all turned out well. The box showed up at my door early this morning, partially dented and torn, but nothing more than i would expect from any delivery company shipping a large box. Took just over an hour to setup and get riding, seat wasn't hard, and everything worked correctly on the bike... :) no complaints.

  • Overall great bike
Overall, I love this bike. I like the extra features it has compared to the 130 model. I specifically bought this model to use the custom programs and additional programs. I've used both models, my parents have the 130 model and I bought the 131 because I like theirs so much, but I wanted the ability to save my own workouts and have a few more set programs available. The only problem with the custom program is that it gets lost if you unplug the unit or lose power. That is annoying. The bike was very easy to put together.

I did have a problem with the bike though, so that is why it's getting only 4 stars. There was a quirk with the reading of the speed / watts where it wouldn't read it correctly and would instead show 37.5 / 199. I called and had a new wire shipped to me which seems to have resolved the issue. The bike is very quiet, but I have to say that the fan is somewhat loud compared to the quietness of the bike....more info
