Beautiful, Stunning Design
Designed by internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton, the Hard Disk features sleek and sophisticated styling. The case is entirely black with a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. A cool, blue LED strip on the bottom casts an ambient glow. The ultra-minimalist look will blend perfectly into home entertainment setups and workstations.

But don't think the design is just about looking good. Built to optimize heat dissipation so that it can operate without a fan, the drive is also designed for convenience and portability. At just 4.6 x 1.8 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing barely two pounds, it can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease.

More Space for More Media
With an additional 750 GB of disk space, the Hard Disk can store up to 52 hours of DV video or 202,000 songs or 825,000 photos. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.

Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
Using the universal and fast USB 2.0 interface, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, this drive will work with both Macs and PCs. Just plug it in and play it. The drive is pre-formatted for use across Windows and Macs, doesn't require any additional drivers, and is ready to go seconds after being removed from the box. The drive features a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.

A compact, fanless design allows for quiet operation. View larger.
The drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.3 or higher. Included in the box is LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (Windows and Mac), as well as LaCie SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac) making backups an easy and painless process.

Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Service
With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.

When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.

This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or damaged, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely protected and accessible.

The LaCie 750 GB USB 2.0 Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

  • Too Noisy!
Although I love the minimalistic design and the cute blue light, this hard disk is much noisier than the 1TB WD MyBook HD I have borrowed from a friend of mine.

I'm an iMac user, and one big reason why I love iMacs is that they don't make any noise. I was mad at the Western Digital HD because of the humming noise it added to the environment, but it wasn't until I got this LaCie that I realized how silent my work environment has been so far! The WD hard disk is noiseless compared to this one! The fan produces a constant humming sound which drives me crazy, to the point that I had to configure my Mac to turn it off automatically, regardless of the fact that this will affect the hard disk's life span. I'll probably only use this for backups so that it stays off most of the time.

If you got a noisy computer or work in a noisy environment and are merely looking for good design, go for it. But if you are really sensitive to noise, you definitely have better options in the market.

  • Great robust external hard drive.
The Lacie External is working very well. It was very simple to setup; no silly drivers from a cd were necessary. I am using the external hd to backup files and hd images of 5 computers. It mounts and dismounts perfectly in Win XP and Vista. Transfer rates are good. The hard drive does not seem to get hot. The design of the hard drive is good. The black casing looks nice but not too flashy. The blue LED blinks with hd activity and is bright enough to be easily visible without being annoying. I like that the hard drive rests horizontally and not vertically in some silly/flimsy stand.
It is everything that I would expect from a usb external hard drive. It also comes with a 2 year warranty, so I expect that the hard drive will last long....more info
  • As functional as it is beautiful
This hard drive has gotten some mixed press, but I ordered two (My wife and I are both geeks and we always get two of the newest cool toys) both drives have functioned well, my wife's has survived her sorting music on and off and shuffling it around endlessly on her drive; and mine has survived being filled nearly to capacity with video files that I have had scattered around the network. Drives work at about average speed, run well and not too hot or noisy, and boy do they look sleek sitting there on the desk all shiny and black!...more info
  • external hard drive
This hard drive is very economical for the capacity. It arrived quickly and my son hooked it to his Mac and was up and running in no time. If it works as well as the last one. It should serve him well....more info
  • Works well with DishNetwork VIP211 converted to DVR
We bought the 750gb version of this drive to use on a Dish Network VIP 211 receiver. This was NOT a DVR receiver, however, Dish is able to send a programming hit to it and make it into a DVR with the addition of an external hard drive. As another reviewer said, Dish's receivers only use USB 2.0 and only recognize up to 750gb, so this drive is perfect. After a quick call to Dish, my receiver reset, found the drive, formatted it and we've been DVRing with it since. Works well and is very quiet. The light is cool, but can sometimes be annoying, as this is on our bedroom receiver. When it gets annoying enough (it hasn't yet), a piece of electrical tape will take care of it, I'm sure. Overall, very pleased with this drive and am going to get another as an external storage source for my VIP 722 receiver in the living room! ...more info
  • Nice design
Like the new design very much, and also function well.

Only one thing need to know: for Mac user, the space left not big enough:-(...more info

Overall I am pleased with this hard drive and would recommend it to other average computer users....more info
  • Great hard drive, the best i've owned!
The Lacie Hard disk external hard drive is the best hard drive I've owned so far, it has a beautiful sleek design, and its is very simple to use. It has optional software to help you back-up your data, or you could just choose to drag and drop files, its Fast, its simple, and looks good, most hard drives come with bloated software but this one comes with just what it needs and thats it. I have this product 5 stars not everything has to be complicated , its just has to and be simple, after reading up on its about how the company returned hard drives free when broken and the support they give just locked me in, it has a nice warranty and and good price!Best hard drive to this day!...more info
  • Good thing their was tech support
Make sure you format the unit so that it will work with MAC and PC. Call tech support BEFORE you format or you might do the wrong thing. Just a suggestion. I had need to be able to transfer data from a MAC for use on my PC and almost made a formatting mistake that would have made the PC data I would later put on it, unattainable via MAC. Really, not transferable/no communication is what I was told. I felt it was worth mentioning even if my info is 80% right. Just be careful. I had to have one of my tech savvy friends liase with tech support....more info
  • Works superbly well!
I was a little nervous about buying this hard drive since it only connects via USB. I have to say that my concern was unwarranted, since this hard drive was quick to back up the first time I used it. On top of that, I was pleasantly surprised how well my Mac OS 10.5.6 recognized the hard drive, it works superbly well with "timemachine". Also, the design is so sleek and elegant that enjoy seeing it on my desk--something you cannot say about so many other hard drives I have seen on the market....more info
  • A good quiet reliable drive
I have 2 of these drives and I've just ordered the third one. They're reliable and very quiet. I've been using LaCie drives for almost 3 years, starting with the 500 gb drives. They've been great.

I did have one drive stop working about a year ago and I called LaCie support and they decided it was the power supply and overnighted a new one for me at their expense. That fixed it.

A good drive and good service. I'm happy!

  • Great hard drive for a great price.
I would definitely recommend this hard drive to anyone. It has a sleek look to it - a very glossy, black interface which will reveal all your fingerprints and dust. But that doesn't matter. 750 GB is a lot of space! Everyone should jump on this bargain. Two things I don't like about it are the noise it makes every once in a while (not a big negative for me, but just something to put out there) and the extremely short usb cable it came with. Works great with my Mac, and was very easy to partition so that I could use half for Time Machine and the other half for photos, school work, movies, etc....more info
  • Great product
I bought this product few months ago and I can tell that is really quiet and cold if you put it over a wood surface. The transfer speed is also really good....more info
  • Good item but......
This is a excellent hard disk, but the external hard disk to need a electric, not USB. so you need everytime energy.

  • Take a Chance
You may get a good HD, or not. The Christmas present was DOA. A few moments with a tester indicated that the power supply was not working. (A problem entioned in other Amazon reviews for this 1tb drive.) Christmas Day, Thursday; did the Amazon paperwork for an exchange which arrived Monday. New HD powered up, initialized and is happily storing LOTS of files. Zero star for the DOA power supply. Five stars for Amazon return. Total of three....more info
  • Looks good, but it's just an external hard drive
Don't expect too much excitement from this hard drive, once you get over the sexy design and funky blue light that glows from beneath the front of it. I'm using it as a backup drive on a Mac and find that it's slow to wake up (and loud as the disk spins up), and that it constantly "forgets" its icon (which I configured via the Apple-recommended process of Copy-Pasting an icon file to the disk).

It's functional, it looks good, but it's kinda loud, and the additional power supply required is kind of lame (hello, power-over-USB). I never leave it plugged in because whenever it does anything, it's loud and the light flashes, which is incredibly annoying, but as a backup drive it's perfect. I plug it in, back everything up, then unplug it. That serves as a double safety because it can't get power-spiked either :)...more info
  • LaCie Hard Drive
Plenty of space, sleek design, easy to use. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!...more info
  • Not as quiet as advertised
Industrial design of unit is very sharp. Projected blue light is cool. However, the unit is advertised as being very quiet, and while it is fanless, the included hard drive, a Samsung, is way too loud during idle. There are competing external drives, as well as other 1TB 7200rpm hard drives, that are much quieter, although not as cool looking....more info
  • Good Deal!
The Lacie has better reviews than others and my son has always used the brand. Installation on my iMac was flawless and quick. I priced external hard drives at Wal-Mart and other places and they cannot compete with my purchase for size and price....more info
  • No problems with this drive

  • Works like a charm...
What can I say? Works like a charm... Even has a one-button-backup that you can install from its' CD, which is nice because it isn't the entire computer (unless you want it to be) but instead, remembers what folders you told it to keep a watch of....more info
  • LaCie 500GB USB hard drive

  • Great for Dish Network DVR VIP622 or VIP722
Works great as an external drive for my Dish Network DVR model VIP722.
This drive is USB only (no eSATA or firewire connectors) and the supplied USB cable is only a foot long or so, and the size is just 750GB.
Those would be deal killers for many current external backup drive users, but as an external drive for the DVR it was perfect since the DVR has only USB connection anyway ... since you'll want to place it on the shelf with the DVR anyway, and since the largest drive the Dish DVR will accommodate is 750GB.
And the best part ... it is gorgeous! It looks great on the shelf with black audio and video equipment, has a cool blue light, is as quiet as a mouse (thanks to a fanless design) and it has an on/off switch so that it can easily be powered down.
After the one time $39.99 activation by Dish, the VIP722 found the drive right away, formatted it, rebooted, and made the drive live. Easy as pie. I moved all the movies I wanted to keep over to the Lacie. Lots of room there. And that really freed up a lot of space on the primary DVR drive for the daily recorded stuff.
I leave the Lacie turned off most of the time, but whenever I want to view a movie, a quick flip of the switch and it's back on line.
This is really the perfect drive for this application. But since I haven't used it for external data storage attached to a PC, I don't know how that would go....more info

  • Lacie won't replace new DOA unit, repair only.
Bought three of these Neil Poulton drives at the start of the month, and one was DOA. Contacted Lacie at the start of the month and I am only now (finally) getting an RMA. Turns out Lacie will not replace my brand new, DOA drive with a new one, they will only "repair" it. I don't have any confidence in any repair work Lacie will do on the drive (which is a Hitachi). Support takes up to three days to answer any emails/queries. This nightmare has gone on now for almost 20 days. At this point I would much rather throw the drive in the trash and forget about it.

Looked at other brands, and they have the same high failure rate, so its a lose/lose no matter which hard drive you purchase, but these drives only have a two year warranty....more info
  • Good drive, just not for my computer
I purchased this drive on sale a few weeks ago.

I found that when this drive is connected via USB to my computer (a custom built computer with a DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL) and with the hard drive plugged in the computer refused to boot, freezing during the POST. Upgraded to the latest BIOS and ensured the LaCie firmware was up to date, still froze on boot.

Wound up simply pulling the bare hard drive to use in my desktop, it was cheaper than a bare drive alone being that it was on sale, and placing an old spare into this great looking enclosure. ...more info
  • Great drive / 1 YEAR (Carbonite) Backup DOA on Vista x64
I purchased the LaCie drive over others because of the 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup. This drive looks great, runs quiet and was a breeze to install on my 3 year old XP Media Center PC. With the software, drive and service it's a great bundle - in theory...

A month after installation, this drive saved me when my old PC started to fail. I was able to boot from a BARTPE CD and move everything to the LaCie before sending it for service (where the drive was wiped). As a USB drive, the LaCie 1TB does the job!

However, the software leaves much to be desired. I replaced the PC with a new Dell XPS430 / Vista x64 only to find the LaCie branded 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup (Carbonite) won't successfully install. While troubleshooting the Carbonite issue (with Carbonite not LaCie), they cancelled my 1 YEAR UNLIMITED service due to inactivity between my PC and their server.
I was then informed I didn't have a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED backup, but merely a trial and according to their rules if I didn't use it for a month, it was cancelled and I couldn't get it back. No resolution yet, but it's evident the LaCie/Carbonite relationship isn't well oiled and LaCie's marketing of a 1 YEAR UNLIMITED online backup isn't viewed the same way by Carbonite....more info
