The Rugged All-Terrain withstands bumps and shocks to keep your data safe and secure.
If you travel a lot with your data, the Rugged All-Terrain is the drive is for you. Perfect for users who need backup, storage and large-volume exchange for office files, photos, music and even video clips, the Rugged All-Terrain is bus-powered, which means that it uses the power of the connected computer to operate and doesn't require an additional AC adapter or power cord.
Three Interfaces for Fast Connections
The Rugged All-Terrain offers speed and versatility with three connection interfaces, letting you use it with almost any computer. The FireWire 800 interface allows for a blistering 800 Mbps data transfer speed, perfect for video editing and other intensive work. FireWire 400 is also supported, which has long been a favorite of Mac users and provides 400 Mbps speeds. The nearly universal USB 2.0 interface is supported as well, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, and is backwards compatible with USB 1.1.
With its driver-free and plug-and-play functionality, exchanging data between Macs and PCs is as easy as it gets--simply plug it into any computer with a USB port and you're ready to go. (The Rugged All-Terrain requires no extra drivers for Windows XP/2000/Vista and Mac OS X operating systems.) It even comes with a power-sharing cable for low-powered USB hubs and computers.
The drive features a spin speed of 5400 RPM, an 8 MB cache, and a transfer rate of up to up to 480 Mbits per second. Measuring a mere 3.5 x 1 x 5.7 inches (WxHxD) and weighing less than nine ounces, the Rugged All-Terrain is designed to travel and will fit easily in your briefcase or backpack. Take it with you on business trips and vacations, or use it for transferring files from one desktop computer to another.
Included with the drive are LaCie software bundles to enhance its performance and functionality, including LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (for Mac and PC) and SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac).
Mobile, All-Terrain Protection
Designed exclusively for LaCie by world-renowned designer Neil Poulton, the Rugged All-Terrain is built like an off-road vehicle, ready to withstand the bumps and bruises of your travels. Its unique, scratch-protected aluminum shell and shock-resistant rubber bumper make it especially resistant to harsh elements. In fact, the drive is designed to withstand vertical drops of up to 35 inches while in non-operating mode. (Dropping the drive while it's in operation, however, could cause damage, so be careful!)
For additional styling points, the Rugged All-Terrain can be outfitted with additional colorful bumpers that will keep your drive protected. Easy-to-change and durable once on, they are made of the same quality rubber as the original bright orange Rugged sleeve. The optional set of three additional bumpers, which is sold seperately, includes green-grey, blue-grey and black bumpers.
Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Service
With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.
When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.
This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or damaged, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely protected and accessible.

This is an effective, convenient and rugged plug-and-play device that, once the originally drive formatting is done in Mac or PC, doesn't require extra software to run: excellent! Usefully, it allows you to assign up to 32 GB of drive space for a different type of operating system (e.g. Mac or PC), an exchange drive partition, whichever one is not your main computer. I'm not clear exactly why the entire drive can't just be 'doubly assigned' in such a manner, but I assume there are technical limitations. While the drive is very good and reliable, the main issue I've had is an error message sometimes when I try to put files on the 'exchange' drive, such a movie clip. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this error since other files with the same extension will work fine. Also be sure to plug it into a powered USB port, i.e. not the one on your keyboard, which won't work. Other than those minor issues, it's a really excellent product! ...more info
- Great Product
Worked great out of the box. Had it for a month with no problems so far......more info
- Great for the price, but not so good for very large file backups.
I own two of these and I use them to backup my ever growing library of home videos. This might not have been the best choice for that purpose, as regardless of what the data transfer rate on the firewire is supposed to be, they bog down badly when transferring files that are hundreds of megabytes in size, like avi files.
However, they do the job. I've got two of them. One is at home backing up stuff, and the other is in off-site storage in a safe deposit box should the unthinkable happen. Every so often I rotate the two so that they are perpetually kept up to date.
And, the one thing I really don't care about is the orange color.
So, with these I was able to implement a genuine off-site backup solution for about two hundred and fifty bucks. Not bad at all.
- Great deal!!
The price is good for the amount of GB you get. The speed with USB or firewire is perfect! No sound at all, really smooth when it's On. Only minor complain will be the size, which doesn't really matter when you compare them with the 80GB disk...which is less than 20% of that capacity you get with the Lacie Rugged. Last but not least, the designed is really cool!!...more info
- Big, fast, warm--requires 2 USB ports and an extra hamster
This drive looks great and has lots of capacity, but I've run in to a couple of things you might want to consider.
I bought the drive to use with my new laptop, a Fujitsu T5010 TabletPC. Unfortunately the laptop comes with a 4-pin Firewire port. The LaCie comes with connectors for USB, 6-pin, and 8-pin Firewire. One must purchase a 4-to-6-pin converter to use the Firewire. I'm using the USB right now and the speed seems pretty good.
The LaCie drive takes some juice to run! The manual says that if the USB bus does not provide enough power, one should plug in the supplemental USB power cable. I have found that I must always plug in both this power cable and the data connector to make the drive work, even on my tower. So the drive will occupy two of your USB ports when running.
The drive makes a great hand warmer on cold days--it runs hot!
Although the drive worked fine with my laptop at first, the two didn't get along last week. When I would plug the power cable in the drive would emit a soft beep-beep-beep-beep, but never the expected whooshing sound of the drive actually running. And while beeping, it would never be recognized by Windows when I would plug in the USB data cable. It never did this on my 2 towers and continued to work fine on them. Could it be that the laptop's lower USB port voltage (4.94-4.96) is right on the edge for the LaCie? The towers always read 5.03-5.06 VDC. Today the drive started to work again on my laptop, but I'm concerned about this potential source of unreliability. If it is a power issue, LaCie does sell a plug-in power adapter, but that kind of defeats the 'All-Terrain' portability lure, no? Does my Fujitsu need an extra hamster? Or does the LaCie need a more efficient motor?
The LaCie drive comes with one year of free unlimited online backup. Unfortunately I was not able to find anywhere on their web site how much the service costs AFTER the year is up. But with Microsoft Office Live offering 25 GB of free storage space I suppose I don't really care!...more info
- I like it!

- Ultimate portable hard drive solution.
LaCie is a great company. This is a big drive with a small form factor. It is also very stable. This drive supports the 3 most popular methods of interface, USB/FireWire 400/800. A Mac and PC user needs all three to be most efficient. None of the 3 ports require wall power or secondary power to spin the drive. Who could ask for anything more? Amazon offers the best price for this drive. You can stop looking....more info

- LaCie 301371 500 GB Portable Hard Drive
First Kuddos to Amazon for very quick surface delivery! The included instructions were easy to follow. The first back-up is unavoidably long -- and did require baby sitting to respond to individual file copying issues, almost all of which dealt with photographs that could not be copied. This required essentially restarting the back-up at the beginning, but DID take a lot less time as it sped through comparing what it had already saved with the original data. I bought two of the drives so that I will always have the current file plus two previous positions. I am very satisfied with the product to-date. Upon the advice of my son, I bought a lot more GBs than my current demands to allow for file growth and a larger capacity replacement computer. I have not had to use the back-up position, thankfully....more info
- Great all around portable hard drive
This is one of the best portable hard drives I have used. First of all it is very sturdy and well made, but it also takes, firewire 400, 800 or USB 2.0, which is great when you sharing information among various computers with various connections. It has very fast rate of transfer and at 500 GB, is plenty of space for most peoples needs....more info

- Great Portable HD
I needed a good high-capacity hard drive when I am doing photography. Something to dump my cards on to and keep shooting but yet would not take too much space or require extra cables/connections. This was perfect. It is powered by the computer and so I need only a Firewire and I am ready to go....more info
- Great straight out of the box
I received the product, took it out of the box, connected the FireWire 800 to the MacBook Pro, received a message about installing, did the quick format to Mac, put my Windows-XP virtual image on the drive, and was up and running in 30 minutes.
I love this drive!...more info

- LaCie Rugged firewire hard drive
If your looking for a self-powered (through firewire/usb) portable hard drive that you can edit off of you should already know you need at least 400 firewire but you can still get drop frames which is what makes this drive so great because it also has 800 firwire conections. Though it is not the most sleak and shinny portable drive out there chances are you wont find more bang for your buck. Considering both 800/400 firewire and usb with 500GB memory for the range of $160-$180 its hard to complain. and though its bulkier than others this ones in it for the long run hense the name rugged. its larger because its more stable and less likely to fail or corrupt a file if droped or tossed around. Bascilly its a whole lot of fast stable memory for a pretty affordable price. i would highly recomend it... ESPECIALLY if you need a portable drive you can edit off of in programs such as final cut pro....more info
- Fragile Drive without Rubber
This HD is good as many reviewers said, I wont ad more Pros
1 Big Cons: without the Rubber or when I pull out the rubber i found that isn't totally aluminum cased,.. the borders are plastic!! mean sadly plastic!

- Does what it's supposed to do
The product is exactly as described and for the last month has performed admirably. No issues, no failures. I use the disk as a backup clone of my laptop hard drive, so it doesn't get everyday use, but on the occasions that I have used it -- particularly when my laptop hard drive failed last week -- it has performed as expected. My husband owns two just like it (one is a different size); his favorable experience with the drives is what led me to purchase mine. We're a happy LaCie family....more info
- LaCie 250 GB
I like the armor features. Unfortunately, it will still be damaged if dropped while being used. To Lacie's credit, that bit of info was posted on the internet for you to see before you buy. Many companies only tell of their products limitations only after you open the box.
The disc has worked well. The thing I dislike is that each time I open a folder, it creates a new window on my Mac's screen, creating a lot of clutter. Maybe there is a way to stop it from opening a new window each time, but I do not know how.
Also, their is no search window for the files. I am used to having that feature on the Mac and some other external drives. It does allow a search using Spotlight....more info
