Customer Reviews: - All Region Portable DVD with Ipod Connection
This is a good product. It works well and the Ipod adapter makes using it convienent for all Ipod users...more info - Can't beat it for the price.
I have not played with out of region dvd features or ipod dock so i can't testify to that, but I can tell you it plays my imation DVD +R disks from my dvd burner as well as factory disks every time. DVDs are inserted in the back and there's a kick stand back there for propping the player up too. Front controls are intuitive and responsive. My 9 year old daughter loves it. Sound is good. Picture quality is not what I would like but what do you expect for the price?
the only negative I can list about the player is the location of the on/off button. It's very easy to accidentally turn it on when the player is in it's sleeve/case. I did that once already and it was on for about 2 hours in the case (and very hot) before I noticed it so you have to watch that.
Case is painted plastic and the ipod dock seems kinda cheap, but again... for the price...
Also comes with a remote and has a built in battery so you can play w/o having it plugged up. To me, those features and the fact that it'll play divx and a list of other formats region free make this a pretty darn good player. My $1000 Sony dvd/surround system at home wont even play divx and it's only about a year old.
This is perfect for my daughter to watch movies on during car trips which is exactly why we got it. ...more info - Ideal
I bought this as a gift for my son, he travels often with two sports he is involved in and enjoys the use of his dvd player for movies and music. His friends are in awe of the gift....more info - Ok item
It is not best fit for car travelling. Finding very difficult to fix in the car seat with pouch....more info - not quite region free
I like this dvd player but there are a few issues.
1. will not play every dvd I have, "Wrong regional disk".(My regular region free dvd plays them all.) Philips does not make it region free so I am trying to resolve the problem wit third party that made it region free. 2. there is not a car case made for it. I did get the case logic 7-9" car case and made it work with a little velcro on the strap across the top. It is working out well so far. Good price for what you get if it plays your dvds....more info - 99 out of 100

I ride the train for 2 hous daily. My iPod fits inside this unit, charges it and keeps it protected. This player has all the right features: 1. Video out to TV 2.Charges iPod in it's dock 3. acts as desktop stereo, digital picture frame (cf slot), iPod speakers, dvd player, divx player, video monitor (Line in), and ipod video screen. 3. It has a easel to use it on your desk. 4. It plays all of your podcasts in a list without having to select and hit play each time to select the next video. 5. It looks like a regular dvd player, which may or may not deter criminals. (I'd rather leave this on my desk than an iPhone, which fits inside it). 6. It has 2 headphone jacks. This is my favorite gadget of 2008, except for one small detail. The power switch is too easy to hit accidentally. Other than that, true perfection. Stick it on your dashboard and drive to your next multi car collision! I'll be on the train!...more info - Philips 8.5 in portable DVD player with iPod dock
It's awesome. I can play all the media in my 2nd and 1st gen iPod Touches and my 1st gen iPod classic. You can keep your iPod inside the player and just control it from the player's interface....more info - Acceptable
Overall this device works great. I bought it for long trips and camping. The max volume needs to be higher. The screen images need to be brighter. I found that I have to press firmly on the buttons to get them to work. The remote control works better. I don't like that there is no flip open cover to protect the screen or that the stand in the back is offset to one side . The slide out cartridge for the ipod and remote sometimes sticks and seems to be poorly designed. Other than that, the price was decent. I guess you get what you pay for. I would recommend this to someone who just wants something to watch movies on in a quiet setting without spending a whole lot of money ...more info - Review for PHILIPS 8.5-Inch PORTABLE DVD PLAYER WITH iPOD DOCK.
The player comes with a neoprene sleeve, a car lighter adapter, a regular plug for the wall, and cords to attach it to your television or VHS/DVD/Stereo/Video Game player.(Basically an AV jack.)
There is a little stand for the DVD Player that almost looks like you will be ejecting the battery so a lot of people miss it. (I've seen complaints in other reviews for this item that said it doesn't have a stand. But it does.)
It plays my DVD's from Britain, Asia, and the U.S. switching easily between the screen formats without distortion. The picture is very clear as well and looks great.
I also put in an SD card from my sister's camera. If you have taken photos and are going through the slide show, be aware that if the photos are vertical, you can turn them but the picture will be cropped and the full photo does not show. Also, it did play some of the MVI videos from the SD card but not all of them for some reason.
It comes with various holders for various iPods. I have a 1G iPod Touch and it works great in the dock. When I bought it I didn't realize that the same dock holds the remote too so if you're traveling with it just pop your remote into the dock and close it and you can carry it along without worrying about losing it. You could do the same with your iPod if you wanted to but it can carry only one or the other -- not both at the same time.
The player allows you to play the youtube features and any videos, music, or photos from your iPod. You just work your iPod from the dock or use the remote and it comes up on the screen.
The plastic isn't super high quality but I think they built it that way to make it lighter.
The one thing I wish it had is a USB port. But otherwise it does the job and does it well.

Acknowledging that a lot of the complaints about the screen are true, this is just one handy dandy little gadget for someone who travels. It's already outdated by Philips standards but it is great for connecting to hotel televisions as an alternative to the usual fare. I have movies and television shows on dvd, my ipod, and memory cards and why waste the flat screen television that has become so popular in many motels on second run movies when you can watch your favorites. I also love the iPod dock.
As long as you get a good deal pricewise AND you understand that the screen is not great, this is fantastic traveling companion. ...more info
