The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). New -- HotFixa? – aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction

hotfix
Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Using Garmin’s unique Web site a?? Garmin Connect Photos a?? users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the n??vi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

Traffic-Capable for Either FM Traffic or Enhanced MSN Direct Content

MSN Direct Enhanced Traffic and Content

traffic reports With an optional receiver, you can access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your n??vi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.

FM Traffic
TMC traffic service coverage map
With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the n??vi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous a?? there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

Widescreen -- See More of What's Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

3-inch screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

Customer Reviews:

  • Good basic GPS
I have owned this GPS for 1 month and have use it around town in Texas. It is OK.

    Pros:
Basic GPS. Guide you to your destination.
Fast re-calc if you deviate from the plotted route.
Convenient POI search for current position, origin and destination.
Favorites: numerious way to save locations to your favorites. Select location from your favorites and Go. You are on your way. Very convenient.
Big fonts displaying distance to your next turn with associated turn direction indicator. If you missed the anouncement, you can easily find out.

    Cons:
It is not good to for exploring map. Sometimes takes a long time to re-draw. Better use google map.
It is very cumbersome to search the POI database, except your current position, origin and destination. Searching en-route may be ok, but I never tried it. To search POI near some place, I have to fake that to be my destination, and do a search near destination. This involves several clicks and several screens. Not very user friendly.
Can not pre-plan your route. If you know a better (local) route, you basically have to go your way, then the GPS will re-calc to adjust to the new route. I guess that this is not a problem if you don't know how to get there in the first place.

  • Out-frickin-standing GPS!
I had a Garmin system in the past, but this is by far the best one of the two. It has a huge screen, it is easy to operate, and it even tells you the speed limit for the road. My favorite feature is the visual representation of the direction you need to go. (It has definitely saved me from re-calculating a route or two.) I love this GPS system! You would be crazy not to get it, especially since it is so darn cheap in comparison with other GPS systems in its class. (Believe me, I have done my homework.) Buy their product; it's awesome....more info

  • Portable GPS Navigator
The Garmin 255W GPS Navigator works great, even better than I'd hoped.

  • You Get More Than What You Pay For
Chocked full of bonuses and the ever popular soothing purple line. In an ever changing world nothing is perfect but with Garmin you'll never get lost. Yes, occassionally it can't find your road (that would be the map designers fault not the product being reviewed) and it does send you the long way once and awhile (did I mention its the map's fault); but you'll always get to where your going. For the price you get all those cool bells and whistles to play with along the way. This is a long way from looking at a map, from who knows how long ago, and gives you the piece of mind that you can find wherever your looking for just by following a soothing purple line. Did I bring up how mindless it is to follow the purple line? Having the speed limit visible next to your speed on the display is helpful (until you get pulled over) and with a resetable trip screen and custom points of interest you have no excuse not to see your family and friends. Ok it does have limits, city driving is not this model's friend. With so many roads so close together it does get you confused (limitations on the product that's why they have a much newer model that tells you what lane to be in and 3D graphics). But it will still get you to your destination (even if it thinks that going through lower Manhattan is the smart choice to get you to Long Island). After all it's just a machine we still have the ultimate right to exercise good judgement. So don't blame the little talking box with the purple line for your bad attitude assume some of the responsibility yourself. A very good buy for what you get! ...more info
  • Very reliable
I highly recommend the Garmin nuvi 255W 4.3-inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator. It's very easy to operate. It's also a nice size, can fit easily in a purse or pocket, and has a big enough screen to see well when driving. I first used it around town to get used to it, and then on a nice trip to around the Hudson Valley, NY. Although, I had no cell phone connection - this GPS worked without a problem....more info
  • Perfect for Me!
Those of you who are just getting into the "GPS" idea... Its perfectly fine to do some research but you don't have to go much further than here. With the free shipping (amazon seller) and the unbeatable price, you can't go wrong. I've found that Garmin is the best, if not one of the best brands out there and the 255W is the perfect model for those of you who are affraid to sotp at the gas station to ask for directions. The wide screen "W" is just a perk for a better view of the screen. It may not have the mp3 player or bluetooth capabilities as does the higher models, but with the newer processor (smoother graphics) and voice prompts, it does the job just fine! ...more info
  • Small and compact but navigation not the best
I purchased this item as a replacement for a Lowrance Iway-500c after the sound stopped working on the lowrance. The 255w is a nice little unit, much smaller than the lowrance and the spoken street names are nice, although as many others have reviewed the voice leaves something to be desired.

Overall the unit finds your location well and navigates OK. We have had navigation issues when you are traveling on roads that are close to one another that it doesn't know where you are or give guidance. For example, you could be on the frontage road and it thinks you are on the highway even though it has both roads mapped. Another issue would be when it tells you to turn on roads that don't intersect. when you miss the turn it does reroute you quickly but it is annoying. Overall I think the Lowrance had a better navigation program.

One other annoyance is the Garmin will not pick the most economical route. It will get you there eventually but you may put on a few extra miles.

If I could replace the Lowrance for the cost of the Garmin I would go that direction in a heartbeat but for the cost the Garmin is adequate.

  • Garmin 255W GPS unit
I am somewhat disappointed in this device. It cannot take you to some addresses! It does not show reststops on the Interstates. You cannot delete individual addresses once entered but, must delete them all-a sign of weak coding! It seems to always look for "main" routes to a destination, avoiding logical shortcuts. It fails to show some established streets when in MAP version. This new unit comes without a computer cable thus, I cannot register my purchase!...more info
  • Garmin 255W
Our Garmin nuvi 255W seems to work exactly as we hoped. This is our first GPS, but it is easy to set up and use. However, the free upgrade map was a little frustrating and confusing. Overall, a very nice unit....more info

Good GPS easy to use. Suction cup not the best, but I ordered dash mount kit....more info
  • Overall a Good GPS
This Garmin is very accurate. It occassionally has trouble "locating satelites". I've had it over a month and have used it a bunch of times, once or twice I have had to reboot it to get the satelite signal. I was able to charge it with my Blackberry charger. I have the Garmin charger for the car. ...more info
  • Yes, this is not the best one out there
I bought it seeing the reviews and the wide screen aspect. Yes, the widescreen works great, shows big visuals. There is one thing that I hate about it though and I might end up taking another GPS - its search capability. I feel there is certainly some bug in the software or that the maps are not updated with complete information. How about this, I have a Wal-Mart at 1 mile from my place but the damn thing does not show up when I search. However some (NOT ALL) Wal-Mart stores 5-20 miles come up in the list. That's really misleading. I am taking only an example of Wal-Mart but a host of well known restaurants, companies and hotels also dont show up. When one is in another city then a good search function is critical and this GPS unit is inconvenient in those regards.
Workaround - I use my blackberry and google maps to get the exact address of the place I want to go and then key in the address in the GPS. It works well that way....more info
  • Garmin nuvi 255w
Product very nice but certain areas of our city have not been updated. Numbers in one area on homes changed 10 years ago and it doesn't register the changes. I have also seen it more reasonably priced in stores since my purchase....more info
  • Good Product
This product is very nice. However, I have two other GPS devices. One Tom Tom and one MIO. Other than this device being 4.3 in screen size I did not find it any better. I would say the price was great but nothing special as to accuracy same as the others....more info
  • Easy to use and stress-free
I have a job where I am on the road often and frequently go to towns I have never been to before. The Garmin Nuvi 255W has made driving for work more stress-free. I do not have to worry about getting lost or looking at maps anymore. The out-loud street names is very helpful and the menus are so easy to use. The screen is easy to read and navigate. I would recommend getting the beanbag dashboard mount Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for nvi Series and StreetPilot C5XX Series GPS Navigators (C530, C550, and C580) if you will use this in multiple cars. It makes it much easier to transfer from car to car without having to undo the suction cup from your windshield. ...more info
  • Nuvi is my guide!
I purchased a nuvi 255w after a fair bit of research. It's my first GPS so I have no basis for comparing it to other brands and models. I wasn't sure I needed or wanted a GPS but based on watching my friends and seeing the falling prices, I decided to buy one. Now I can't believe I didn't get one a long time ago. I used it extensively on a recent trip to North Carolina, about 800 miles from home. Even though I had made the trip about a dozen times before, Nuvi saved at least an hour each way. One example is the route from Harrisonburg, Va to Chapel Hill, NC. Google laid out a route and estimated 4.5 hours driving time. Nuvi estimated 3.5 hours and it took 3.5 hours. Furthermore Nuvi chose an exceedingly scenic and pleasant route through central Virginia and North Carolina. On the final leg of the route home, Nuvi chose a way I had never gone and the route was at least as fast and far more pleasant than the ways I usually choose. On previous trips I usually spent considerable time poring over maps, fretting about the details of the route, and swearing over poorly marked turns or roads. This trip I handed all of that over to Nuvi and enjoyed the scenery. In my economic calculus, Nuvi has already paid for itself.

  • Nuvi 255W
I waited for the right model and right price for a long time. Finally found the one I want but didnt time the purchase properly. The price dropped by over $10 within a week after I had placed the order. Oh well !

Havent used it a whole lot yet but I really like the wide screen which makes it easier to see / read while driving and the US English voice is clear. The speakers are ok and has that "vibration" over 70% volume which is where you need to be when driving and playing music. Gamrin could pay a little attention to the speakers.

The one time free software upgrade that is offered helps but plan in advance as installation takes forever. Could use a faster processor - sometimes it takes for ever to search its database. I have learnt to use favorites on destinations I frequent which helps. The map navigation is fast enough but sometimes the hourglass goes on and on when searching database for destination as simple as Traders Joe even when you are just round the corner from it.

Overall I like this product and recommend it. Its comparatively inexpensive for all the features it boats like 4.3" widescreen, Text-to-speech with real street names, transfer from google maps etc....more info
  • Easy to use right out of the box!
I love this GPS. It's one of the few electronics that I could use right away. There's not much in the way of instructions, but the menu screen is easy to use. The voice navagation tool is super helpful. The only problem is that at first the voice added the street name to turns, but the third time I used it they were not given. After going through all the menus and help function, I couldn't find a way to get that feature back. So, I'll have to contact Garmin to find out what's wrong. Other than that, it works great and I'm very satisfied....more info

  • Worth every penny
I bought one of these for my wife (who always gets lost) and it's worth every penny. You don't need to read any directions to figure out how it works and the touch-screen is very user friendly. I bought this one because it is portable, so my wife can take it in whatever car she is using. Her friends have obviously enjoyed this benefit. ...more info
  • Good GPS
    - This is a good basic GPS. I don't see the need for all the bells and whistles.
    - Wide screen is great.
    - This unit says the street names. That's a must have.
    - Great price.
    - No instruction or owners manual. You can print it online. ...more info
  • Garmin 255w is Great!
Love this widescreen gps and it's ease of operation. I was easy to mount and fun to turn on just to watch the name of the street signs and topography in FL. Of course I had to change the vehicle to the Garmin "nascar" version. Downloading to our PC and upload was seamless. We knew two satisfied customers and had seen theres, the price with free shipping and no tax made ours a "no brainer". GREAT PURCHASE!!...more info
  • The good outweigh the bad
I get lost. Sometimes my Garmin nuvi 255W gets lost, too. When setting Garmin for a new destination, it sometimes takes me to a different place - off by miles, at times. Usually, at that point, I can simply try again to enter the destination and then it will take me to the correct location.

Once at the destination, I can save it to "Favorites" and then Garmin will always know where it is and can get there from ANY STARTING POINT.

Asside from this occasional glitch, I find the Garmin nuvi 255W to be practical and user-friendly. It has a lot of good features - including a speedometer, posted speed limits on major roads, and it notes your average and max speed on your current trip. A clear voice tells me when the turns are coming up, as well as the names of the roads.

Garmin has many good features and knows how to find a lot of places - but not ALL places, but I think the good outweigh the bad and I rate it 4 stars out of 5; 80%. ...more info
  • Great GPS system!!
I upgraded from nuvi 360 which I had since 2006.

I really love the new interface, the turn signs at the corner, speed limit indicator and the fast satellite reception.

I was confused between 255W and 265WT, But I really didn't need the traffic thing, mp3 player and the bluetooth. So I settled with the 255W.

I told my friend that I'm getting one, told him about the features. And I ended up with ordering 2 of them.

    Great product....more info
