New -- Improved Interface

One of Garmin's key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nĘ╣vi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate.

This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.

New -- HotFix™ - aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction

hotfix
Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Using Garmin's unique Web site — Garmin Connect Photos — users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google's Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nĘ╣vi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

Traffic-Capable for Either FM Traffic or Enhanced MSN Direct Content

MSN Direct Enhanced Traffic and Content

traffic reports With an optional receiver, you can access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nĘ╣vi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.

FM Traffic
TMC traffic service coverage map
With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nĘ╣vi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

Widescreen -- See More of What's Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

Customer Reviews:

  • Garmin Nuvi 205W rocks
My husband is so happy with his Christmas gift. He really missed having a GPS in his Toyota truck after we purchased my Lexus with a GPS. He loves this Garmin. And it's so easy to use even a "non-techy" like him was able to begin using it right away.

I would definitely recommend this Garmin....more info
  • Garmin nuvi 205W GPS

  • Excellent product, but--
Does everything that a gps should do. Easy to operate, and gives the directions that you need. But, in order to register the product, and recieve the free initial database update, you have to connect the unit to your computer. The connecting cable is not included with the unit. After I purchased the cable for an additional cost, the registration and update were sucessful....more info
  • Garmin nuvi Navigator
I bought two of these Garmin units; one for my wife and one for my daughter away at college.

Each tried them out and found them easy to use and very handy. Finding addresses and following the voice navigation is great but each also use it around town to find store locations etc. under the "points of interest" icon.

Screen is a good size and for the price point a good overall value. ...more info
  • Garmin nuvi 205W VS Magellan Roadmate 1412
My boyfriend and I got Magellan Roadmate 1412 for christmas gift. We already saw Garmin at the store and we already knew Garmin is what we want. So we decided since this Magellan was a gift so should give it a try. My opinion Magellan is not good. When we were driving and testing out the Magellan Roadmate 1412 and we could see many restaurant, gas store, food store and many icons clustered on the screen. We didn't ask for that to be there on the screen at all. If we want gas or food shopping simple go into selective to pick what destination to go to. Also, other cons about Magellan is some roads name won't show up on Magellan and some visible road is out there but not show on Magellan also. Also, when near to next turns on right or left the screen will go to split and show half of road and half of the turns where soon to turn. Also, Magellan don't have anti-theft security.

We decided to inform our relative who got that Magellan Roadmate 1412 for us for christmas to replace to Garmin Nuvi 205W which is on sale more less than Magellan. We are very satisified with Garmin because Garmin have anti-theft security, very simple and easy to use, don't have icons clustered like Magellan does, have speed odometer, will show speed limit on that road, won't turn to half on screen to show where to turn next like Magellan does, if you want to see where to turn next simple click on left top on Garmin then will show you. Overall, Garmin Nuvi 205W is very simple, easy, and very satisify!!!! We will buy Garmin again in the future and recommend this to our friends and family....more info

  • Comes with car charger and suction mount
Just received the Garmin Nuvi 205W. I've played with it at the local Best Buy and Amazon has the best price. However, Amazon doesn't disclose what's in the box on this item: there's a car charger and suction mount in the box. Thinking it only came with an AC adapter, I ordered a separate car charger and suction mount, and now I have to send it back. Frustrating but not a deal killer. I also erroneously assumed there would be an AC adapter charger, but that's extra, so now I have to wait for that to come, when I would have ordered it at the same time as the GPS unit. Overall, it is a great unit, but the lack of info both from Amazon and from Garmin cost it a star.
Update 2/7/09: I ordered a second unit for my wife and she loves it too. ...more info
  • Great first time GPS!
I've just gotten this GPS unit home and it is definitely worth the money. The screen is nice and large with very little glare, the voice is loud and clear, and the calculations are extremely accurate. It has a few little extras that I love, including the speed limit of the road you're on and estimated arrival time. The maps are from 2007, so I guess I'll have to update those, probably around Christmas time this year. Already I've encountered one area that's a new development and the changes haven't been added to my maps.

Over all it is a great system. I found it easy to use (didn't even need to book!), it fits great in my hand, and the bells and whistles are some amazing perks.

My only pock mark on the whole experience? I got it from Best Buy without shopping for the best deal and ended up paying $30 more than I would have on Amazon. Although, had I bought one online I might have gotten a TomTom instead, which wouldn't have been as nice as the Garmin. The in-store advice, probably not worth the extra money, but the Garmin was definitely worth the extra money over the TomTom!...more info
  • Great Gift
I bought this as a Christmas gift and my son loves it. He said it was easy to use and enjoys the portability of the unit. Makes it much easier to navigate the Chicago land area....more info
  • Best value out there!
I've had this for 6 months, and I must say I like it! I've owned Tom Tom's, mio's, used a magellan and won't go back! The screen is excellent, nice size, very quick satellite acquisition, and the best routing by far (the main reason we buy these, right?).

I always thought 4.3 screens were unnecessary, but its so nice when you are turning to see more of the map in the direction you are turning!

Also, I believe the Garmin's are the only GPS's that tell you which side of the street your destination is one, AND usually routes you so that its on your right side. When you are in a city you don't know, this is a must-have feature in my opinion.

Also, POIs are very good, only occasionally does it not find the store I'm looking for.

The other thing I wanted to add was that I was frustrated finding a case that was slim, pocketable, inexpensive, and fits this like a glove. I was psyched to finally find something at Staples that fits it perfectly (for $7 no less). Check out the Case Logic JDS-6 usb shuttle. I know this isn't listed as a gps case, but it works perfectly for this unit.

Also consider getting a vent mount for this, its so nice to have the gps right at your fingertips instead of reaching forward to the windshield....more info
  • This is the GPS to buy your parents as a gift...
This particular Garmin model is the value choice if you aren't looking for all the bells and whistles. It's a basic GPS in a nice form factor and it does what it's supposed to quite well. Lower 48 sates maps, no text to speech, no MP3, no Bluetooth, etc. If you're looking for the GPS to give your tech-challenged friends or family, this one does the trick....more info
  • gotta have it
It is exactly what I wanted at a very reasonable price. Go get yourself one....more info
  • Go with the widescreen
After much debate and research, I finally purchased the nuvi 205W. I would highly recommend the widescreen. My father has the 250 (not widescreen) and it really does make a difference. It's easy to use and all of my research pointed to Garmin over all of the other manufacturer's. We've used it on several trips (so nice not to have to print directions anymore!) and don't have a single complaint. I do recommend getting the 'bean bag' that goes on your dashboard rather than the suction cup for the window that comes with the GPS. Well worth the expense. Also recommend getting an AC adapter if you aren't on the road all the time to charge it before a trip. You will need to leave the GPS plugged in during the trip (comes with a charger for your car) as it won't hold a charge for more than a couple of hours unplugged. ...more info
  • Garmin nuvi 205w and Garmin nuvi 200w
Garmin Nuvi 205W seems to be working well. I bought it for my wife after she continued to have problems obtaining satelite signals on her Garmin Nuvi 200W. The 205W remembers for up to three days were the satelites were so when you turn it on it obtains a signal quicker. The 200W will maintain the signals, even if you turn it off, as long as you do not unplug it from the vehicle charger....more info
  • works great
excellent for the price, would be great if could enter in routes to avoid things like certain routs, tolls, etc...more info
  • Research first and you'll have no regrets
I received this unit as a gift for the 08 holidays, at the time it was priced at one seventy five plus shipping, now at one sixty with free shipping it is a better deal than ever.

I wouldn't recommend choosing the 255w over this. it's not worth the forty dollar difference for only text-to-speech and no other features.

It turns on and finds locations very fast, the menu is not blazing responsive but gets the job done, and it has a good amount of POI's. Unit is sleek and the window mount is sturdy. It does fairly well at giving directions in the city, but it will on occasion try to lead you into a 1 way street from the wrong end or not be specific enough with finding smaller places that are "a hole in the wall." Hopefully your common sense will prevail. :) Fortunately, it reroutes very fast.

This unit is great, unless you plan extensive traveling in europe. Don't pay for bluetooth connectivity in a gps, the sound quality is never that great compared to more affordable standalone hardware. Not sure if the 265w is worth it, although the traffic service is nice. This unit does a great job of predicting arrival times regardless.

For the price and features, with the almight garmin to back it up, this unit can't be beat. No regrets here.

  • LOTS FOR THE $$$
For the money, this is a GREAT gadget!! It actually has more and does more than I'd bargained for!! The ONLY drawback .. I THOUGHT it would name the streets. It doesn't and that gets confusing when it tells you to turn left (or right) and there are more than 2 options!!! The wide screen is fantastic. Very easy to see day or night. I have used Garmin GPS units in my job for a number of years and they always come through for me. They are pretty user friendly, which is what I want/need!! I have been wanting to get a portable, highway type GPS for my vehicle for several years but didn't want to pay the price. Nowadays, it's not so easy to stop at a gas station and ask directions ... no one knows where anything is, anyway!! I love watching how the speed limit changes on the screen as I drive past a new speed limit sign. It's almost magic!! I am very happy with my Garmin portable navigation system! (One review I read was very helpful in that the author stated the auto converter DOES come with the unit!!)...more info

  • Great product
I am a well versed electronics user and consider this GPS a great product. Without getting into specifics, it extremely fast at calculating routes, rerouting, and determining where you are as soon as it is turned on. Other GPS's take a few minutes to "warm up" and figure out where you are located upon turning them on, but not this one. My father is not very tech savvy and he is able to easily input addresses and use this GPS. He struggled with his previous unit but praises this one for its speed and user interface. Not much else to say. If you are on the edge, you will not be disappointed.

Pros: Every feature it has works great. Kudos to the great mount.
Cons: Although it displays the distance until your next movement, it does not display the distance left for the entire trip. Not a big deal since it gives you an estimated arrival time, but it is a display feature I'm used to having on my previous GPS. This is not a con that would prevent me from purchasing....more info
  • Improving but still not great
I will give some comparison for those who were also considering the earlier units, especially the 7x0 models.

The 2x5 units have a faster processor, and the routing and menus are noticeably snappier. The display is also cleaner and shows the MPH on the main screen.

Compared to the relatively mature 760, it is MUCH more stable probably due to the less (gimmicky) features. As others have commented, the touch screen is not as good as the older 7x0 models and takes a more definite press. Also, the display is not as bright, and the voice prompts get distorted when turned up loud.

The big killer of the deal for me was that this uses a much different (probably cheaper) GPS receiver chipset. The 7x0 and a very old GPS that I have typically get signals in 1/2 minute or so which is about all I have the patience for when going somewhere. This one often took several minutes before prompting that it just couldn't locate the GPS satellites. Sometimes, after a few tries (and probably 5 minutes), I would give up waiting pulled over on the side of the road. There is an option to just do a simulation where it "drives" for you and shows the route, but that defeats the purpose of a GPS.

One final but major irritation is that when it routes you a sub-optimal way, there is no way to tell it to include a certain freeway or road. There is an option to add a way-point that is an intersection, but the majority of times, it would go something like this: a) enter the city, it finds it OK, press next, b) enter the freeway, it finds it OK, press next, c) enter the exit street name, it finds it OK, press next, and d) it says it's invalid! This happens time and time again. I found the only way to work around this is to cancel navigation, go into map view mode, scroll around, study and learn the area and find some other local intersection that hopefully would be valid. Then, go back in, and use that intersection. Of course, then it navigates you off the freeway to this other way-point which is obviously not a suitable workaround.

I do give it two stars because of the price, and it is a step in the right direction, but I was sorely disappointed with this highly-rated item.

  • garmin nuvi 205w
The nuvi 205w touch screen responses very slow especially for panning map. Sometime, it speaks wrong information such as the display shows 0.2 miles but it say 0.4 miles. It has 4.3 screen but the font size is smaller than the old nuvi 360 which make it harder to read the street name. Unlike, the nuvi 360, this one has a very bad design for DC power cable, you have to pull the cable from the back of the unit everytime when you remove the unit from the window attachment. ...more info
  • Better than expected
I've been skeptical about just how useful an auto GPS might be since we have been using maps for many years with no problem. Happy to say this unit turned out to be a nice addition.

Nice features, such as one's speed as well as the posted limit (most of the time). Finding points of interest, such as a local Home Depot made life simpler when we were in Durango a week ago and had no idea where the store might be. Spot on. Drove right to it. My wife, who is not a computer person, found it easy and fun to use. Would recommend to anyone wanting a basic easy to use GPS.

Have not tried the upload offer yet so have no idea how or if it will work with an iMac....more info
  • A good non-geek GPS unit
I have an older Garmin V that I have used for about 7 years. The old Garmin is great for driving around provided you plan ahead and update the maps to show where you're traveling. If you forget, you miss critical detail and you'd better have good local maps. I still have that unit and use it mostly in the woods due to its limited memory.

So on a recent trip to Sacramento, I decided to upgrade to a newer unit that had more memory. The 205W worked so well out of the box I was a little disappointed. The tech on these is so simple now it's almost 'boring' to use. It navigated rapidly and accurately and provided clear directions within minutes. Most amazing to me was how well it picked up satellites compared to the Garmin V. Extremely fast and even worked resting in the space between the seats of our rental car. Pretty cool.

I'm not sure you can go wrong with the 205W. I've been a GPS geek for about 10 years and we use them at work.

The 205W is intuitive enough for most folks to use right out of the box and the routing is good. By 'good', I mean it's fast and accurate. If you accidentally drive by something it quickly recalculates a route for you.

The screen is nice and bright too, even in daylight. It is wise to bring along the supplied 12 volt cigarette lighter plug as it seems to last for very short times on battery alone and there is no way to replace the battery or bring along a spare. Fortunately, you can charge it off a mini-usb port from your computer too so it's not a big issue but if you're the forgetful sort, perhaps a replaceable battery model is better for you.

This is not a unit you'd really use in the back-country. It's designed for highway use and works great for that. There are other more costly units that more effectively marry the needs of sportsman and the occasional traveler.

It does nicely link up with Google Earth via your computer (you'll need to latest free version of Google Earth). It does not appear to provide a real-time GPS position signal to your computer (my 7 year old Garmin V does though) so if you're looking for that capability this doesn't appear to be a solution for that specific problem. However, if you are traveling and wish to save the addresses / places that you visited it easily imports that information and it's pretty cool to see those points overlaid on Google Earth.

You can add an SD card and put photos and stuff on it like you might on a USB memory stick but I don't think many people use that sort of capability.

You can easily download different icons to show your position. I downloaded the tank. The tank rules. It's a gimmick but it shows the folks at Garmin have a sense of humor.

You can view your route in the traditional overhead routing or 3D; both work really well.

The provided suction cup mount works very well. It uses a ball mount that allows for infinite positioning. If you want a really rugged mount I'd strongly recommend the Ram-Mount systems available online. I bought one for my ATV and it's amazingly stout and simple. I digress.

If your primary need for a GPS is a very simple, plain and effective unit for over the road travel, this will exceed your needs and your expectations in an easy to use package. ...more info
