The Rugged All-Terrain withstands bumps and shocks to keep your data safe and secure.
Ultra-Portable Data Shuttle
If you travel a lot with your data, the Rugged All-Terrain is the drive is for you. Perfect for users who need backup, storage and large-volume exchange for office files, photos, music and even video clips, the Rugged All-Terrain is bus-powered, which means that it uses the power of the connected computer to operate and doesn't require an additional AC adapter or power cord.

Three Interfaces for Fast Connections
The Rugged All-Terrain offers speed and versatility with three connection interfaces, letting you use it with almost any computer. The FireWire 800 interface allows for a blistering 800 Mbps data transfer speed, perfect for video editing and other intensive work. FireWire 400 is also supported, which has long been a favorite of Mac users and provides 400 Mbps speeds. The nearly universal USB 2.0 interface is supported as well, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, and is backwards compatible with USB 1.1.

With its driver-free and plug-and-play functionality, exchanging data between Macs and PCs is as easy as it gets--simply plug it into any computer with a USB port and you're ready to go. (The Rugged All-Terrain requires no extra drivers for Windows XP/2000/Vista and Mac OS X operating systems.) It even comes with a power-sharing cable for low-powered USB hubs and computers.

The drive features a spin speed of 5400 RPM, an 8 MB cache, and a transfer rate of up to up to 480 Mbits per second. Measuring a mere 3.5 x 1 x 5.7 inches (WxHxD) and weighing less than nine ounces, the Rugged All-Terrain is designed to travel and will fit easily in your briefcase or backpack. Take it with you on business trips and vacations, or use it for transferring files from one desktop computer to another.

Included with the drive are LaCie software bundles to enhance its performance and functionality, including LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (for Mac and PC) and SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac).

Mobile, All-Terrain Protection
Designed exclusively for LaCie by world-renowned designer Neil Poulton, the Rugged All-Terrain is built like an off-road vehicle, ready to withstand the bumps and bruises of your travels. Its unique, scratch-protected aluminum shell and shock-resistant rubber bumper make it especially resistant to harsh elements. In fact, the drive is designed to withstand vertical drops of up to 35 inches while in non-operating mode. (Dropping the drive while it's in operation, however, could cause damage, so be careful!)

For additional styling points, the Rugged All-Terrain can be outfitted with additional colorful bumpers that will keep your drive protected. Easy-to-change and durable once on, they are made of the same quality rubber as the original bright orange Rugged sleeve. The optional set of three additional bumpers, which is sold seperately, includes green-grey, blue-grey and black bumpers.

Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Service
With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.

When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.

This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or damaged, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely protected and accessible.

The LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Portable Hard Drive is backed by a 3-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

  • Portable yet breakable
Broke after a month, won't mount. Lost all of my data and now the lacie support team is running having me run in circles. Worst hard drive experience. Don't buy this product. ...more info
  • Great Product
Worked great out of the box. Had it for a month with no problems so far......more info
  • Great straight out of the box
I received the product, took it out of the box, connected the FireWire 800 to the MacBook Pro, received a message about installing, did the quick format to Mac, put my Windows-XP virtual image on the drive, and was up and running in 30 minutes.

    I love this drive!...more info
  • A great drive
This drive does everything the product information says it does. A very portable light weight drive. Lacie is a great company and they stand behind their products from previous experience with the company; I travel a lot and take this drive with me....more info
  • Small, hardy, fast, easy, and working perfectly
Very happy with this hard drive. Works perfectly with Mac Book Pro and Time Machine, and very fast data transfer with Firewire 800. One thing to be aware of if you're planning to use this on Windows and Mac machines: When I configured my drive to use primarily on a Mac machine, but with the capability to interface with Windows as well, I found that a partition on the disk was made, so that part of the hard drive could be used for Mac files and part for Windows files. The maximum space that could be devoted to Windows files in this case was 30 GB, so it would be a mistake to think you have the full 320 GB available for both types of machines. ...more info
  • Great Buy!
Worked right out of the box. Immediately used to backup my iTunes and iPhoto library. Speedy and quiet external HD. I don't know how this unit will respond to "bumps-and-bruises" but it looks very rugged from the outside. I've purchased LaCie Hd in the past and have never been disappointed with its performance....more info
  • Ok but not great.
Good hard drive, and comfortable size. I used it for my macbook pro and is just plug and play.

The software included from LaCie is not good at all, because is a backup program without the restore option. (???)

The firewire (F400) is kind of loose and disconnects easily.

  • Excellent storage option
I use this drive as my Time Machine drive for my Macbook. Works great, bus powered so it's easy to plug in and backup quickly. It's pretty small so I can keep it in my laptop bag. It's also a great storage option for large video files that I don't want to store on the main HD. Highly recommend....more info
  • It's all about the interfaces
Having the three choices for connecting is why I bought it. I have 3 partitions on it. One for external Mac boot (think Firewire 800), second for Time Machine (Firewire 400 from my MacBook), and the third for data (USB or Firewire take your pick). Great product....more info
  • So far, so good
I've had a 160 for a year or so, and just bought two 320s. I was terrified to do so after all the "dead right out of the box" comments, but decided I'd had good luck with my 160, and there were plenty of people who seemed to have similar experiences with this drive design. So far, both 320s working great....more info
  • I like it!
LaCie's rugged drive is a great plug in and go hard drive. I'm no tech guy, so i like that it is easy to use and so portable....more info
  • Pretty Good...
It come with one year online backup service which is pretty good. But the hardisk back up program is a little tricky, maybe since I didn't read the manual?
Anyway, pretty easy to use, and seems pretty firm......more info
  • False Advertising!!!
"Gets power from the USB bus so no extra adapter is required."

This is a lie! This battery sucks so much juice "5amps" that it won't work on my netbook. IT EVEN HAS A SECOND USB PLUG TO DRAW POWER THAT DOESN"T WORK!!!

WHY WOULD YOU DESIGN A RUGGED MOBILE HARD DRIVE THAT ONLY WORKS ON DESKTOPS AND 10LB LAPTOPS!

If I wanted a plug in hard drive I would've bought one.

It's transfer speeds on firewire 400 are also horribly slow.

  • Great Portable HD
I needed a good high-capacity hard drive when I am doing photography. Something to dump my cards on to and keep shooting but yet would not take too much space or require extra cables/connections. This was perfect. It is powered by the computer and so I need only a Firewire and I am ready to go....more info
  • Great for the price, but not so good for very large file backups.
I own two of these and I use them to backup my ever growing library of home videos. This might not have been the best choice for that purpose, as regardless of what the data transfer rate on the firewire is supposed to be, they bog down badly when transferring files that are hundreds of megabytes in size, like avi files.

However, they do the job. I've got two of them. One is at home backing up stuff, and the other is in off-site storage in a safe deposit box should the unthinkable happen. Every so often I rotate the two so that they are perpetually kept up to date.

And, the one thing I really don't care about is the orange color.

So, with these I was able to implement a genuine off-site backup solution for about two hundred and fifty bucks. Not bad at all.

  • LaCie 320GB Rugged All-Terrain
This is a great product, but it would be better if there was a more even split between storing from Windows and storing from Mac. Otherwise, couldn't have a better experience as a generally clumsy person who drops stuff more than the average. It also holds up well thrown into a backpack. I like the variety of cables as well. Overall, this compact drive is definitely one of the best on the market....more info
  • Great product for the money!
Wow is all I can say about this external hard drive. I was looking for one because my MacBook had just about 3GB of space left on the hard drive at one point. So I knew I needed an external hard drive. I bought this (320GB) for $109. Nothing! Absolutely nothing can beat that price, especially for 320GB! I purchased this external hard drive on Sunday January 17. I received it in the mail (without paying shipping) that wednesday January 21. I didn't pay anything for shipping and received this in 4 days. That is really nice. I would definitely recommend this external hard drive to anyone because there are different sizes (160GB 320GB 500GB) and it is built to withstand rough impacts. Buy this product. It is great!

Just for anyone who was wondering, this product does come with the orange casing. I was reading some reviews and one of them said you had to buy it separately. It does come with the orange rubber case. It also comes with a few different cords for firewire and usb 2.0

Buy this product it is defiantly worth it!...more info
  • Fragile Drive without Rubber
This HD is good as many reviewers said, I wont ad more Pros
1 Big Cons: without the Rubber or when I pull out the rubber i found that isn't totally aluminum cased,.. the borders are plastic!! mean sadly plastic!
men this is the reason to rate only ***3 I look for a totally aluminum case
EX hard drive, this drive let me down. and no one mention this before....more info
  • Horrible product for OS X users
RUN AWAY!!! I've used LaCie's higher-end external drives for years as a video editor. I know that some of their low-end drives, like the Porsche series are dogs. As for this one, I don't know if my drive is defective or if this is just a terrible product, but here is my experience: If you need an external hard drive, you probably have a time-sensitive storage problem. You expect the drive to work, and quickly. I have been going back and forth with LaCie tech support for four days by e-mail-note that they have no telephone service or live chat-as they ignore my problem. It takes 12-24 hours to get a response for each question, as they tell me to redo things I've already told them I've tried. THIS DRIVE WON'T MOUNT IN OS X; it is native formatted for OS 9. Who has OS 9 anymore? It's 2009, come on guys. They provide a install wizard that is supposed to autodetect OS X users and reformat the drive for you. It doesn't work! Then the wizard refers you to use Mac's own Disk Utility to partition the drive. Disk utility can't even mount the external hard drive. Isn't that a pickle. I'm left with a product that won't mount to even be reformatted--USELESS! On top of that, this is advertised as bus powered, but with a Powerbook G4 I have to use the included USB power cable to get the drive to spin at all-no matter what port I am using, Firewire 400, 800 or USB 2.0. It may not even be getting enough power to mount through this attached cable-this may be the problem. And note that the USB power cable takes up your other USB port, which is massively inconvenient. An AC adapter would be preferable. I know they say you can run over this drive with a truck (when it's OFF-nobody says you can drop this thing while it's running, which is really the problem you worry about), but how often does that happen? Maybe I'll stick with less gimmicky products and try to find one that just plain and simple mounts. ...more info
  • Great Drive
I have a MACBook Pro and needed extra space and this drive has been a great add on to my Laptop. A must for Apple or PC owners with the need for extra GB storage. A+ ...more info
  • outstanding rugged drive
We do a tremendous amount of field work as forensic crime scenes. This drive has been through every weather condition and dropped or bumped numerous times. It's design and architecture has kept our data error free and protected. Although we normally use our own backup software, the backup utility is fast and easy to use.

Highly recommended for any Military or Law Enforcement professional...more info
  • Nice but rugged???
A nice external hard drive that seems to do what it claims on the propaganda. It is an ugly little thing but the casting is nice and hard so I suppose it is rugged. If I could relive the moment when I bought this item would I make the same mistake again?? Yes, I suppose I would make that mistake again. ...more info
  • At your risk
I bought this for a Christmas present. It arrived in a typical software paperboard box with the drive basically exposed in the BIG shipping box. The shipping box it was sent in was 5x bigger then the drive. No innerpak. It rattled in the box from florida to South Dakota like a marble. I wouldn't even consider using it considering all drives are somewhat fragile.Amazon has been good in the past and this was shipped out of XP passport inc. Cearwater,Florida FOR Amazon. I'll buy it elsewhere. ...more info

  • there is a problem in the lineup
Purchased a year ago on the suggestion of a mac enthusiast who owns several of the drives and swears by them. Simple setup and formatted for mac. Runs cool, quiet. Dependable.Transferred with firewire entire iphoto galley in minutes. Problem is its own success.I whish to buy another. While I like the price reduction from$170 down to $109 ,the rugged drives are all the identical size and colour . Yes you can buy other ,rather pricey bumpers and play dressup ,but why?Great electronics, bad art....more info
  • Great all around portable hard drive
This is one of the best portable hard drives I have used. First of all it is very sturdy and well made, but it also takes, firewire 400, 800 or USB 2.0, which is great when you sharing information among various computers with various connections. It has very fast rate of transfer and at 500 GB, is plenty of space for most peoples needs....more info

  • Does what it's supposed to do
The product is exactly as described and for the last month has performed admirably. No issues, no failures. I use the disk as a backup clone of my laptop hard drive, so it doesn't get everyday use, but on the occasions that I have used it -- particularly when my laptop hard drive failed last week -- it has performed as expected. My husband owns two just like it (one is a different size); his favorable experience with the drives is what led me to purchase mine. We're a happy LaCie family....more info
  • Not plug & play with XP
I was surprised to find that this drive is not plug and play with XP. When I first plugged up the drive with USB, it began a formatting process and then I got a fatal error. After that, the drive was not visible through windows interface. The enclosed manual had no details about this. The website did have some information, even though it was not completely clear. After a couple of hours, I got the disk cleaned and formatted using a DOS prompt. It had to be treated as a corrupt drive because it uses the newest drive format (out of the box) that is not recognized by XP. I would not recommend this drive to the novice XP user. According to the website there would be no issue with a Mac or Vista.

It is fast going from my SATA II hard drive to the LaCie using Firewire 400. No other issues at this time. The back-up software is very simplistic with few options and it is very slow. It is much faster just to copy the files....more info
  • Easy setup, working in 10 minutes
Received the Lacie Rugged 320GB yesterday (12/26/08),hooked it up to the MacBook did the formatting and had it backing up my hard drive in 10 minutes. Very simple and easy to use. The only thing that could be changed is a firewire cable that is not so large in diameter. Does get a little warm when doing a backup. Fits perfect into the Case Logic Hard Drive Case....more info

I think this a great product. I use WD Passport alon with this one and i think this product is in a class of its own.....Worth the extra dollars yu have shell out. It has faster transfer rates than WD Passport 500GB even on USB connection. The fact that it has firewire 800 is just another Bonus.
The built quality is amazing, it feels like it will last forever and the fact that it comes with 3 yrs warranty only helps to reassure the feeling.
The only downside that i can think of is that it is not as sleek as the competition. Overall, its a winner...more info

  • LaCie 250 GB
I like the armor features. Unfortunately, it will still be damaged if dropped while being used. To Lacie's credit, that bit of info was posted on the internet for you to see before you buy. Many companies only tell of their products limitations only after you open the box.
The disc has worked well. The thing I dislike is that each time I open a folder, it creates a new window on my Mac's screen, creating a lot of clutter. Maybe there is a way to stop it from opening a new window each time, but I do not know how.
Also, their is no search window for the files. I am used to having that feature on the Mac and some other external drives. It does allow a search using Spotlight....more info
  • USB connection is OK, Firewire connectivity is dodgy
I bought one of these "triple interface" LaCie 250 gb "Rugged" drives off Amazon. Perhaps it's just mine that's defective, but mine kept having connection problems when linked to my computer using the Firewire 800 or 400 cables provided with the disk. However, the USB connection works great. So I'd recommend getting the USB only version instead. (My computer is a G4 Powerbook running Os X 10.5.6)...more info
  • Ultimate portable hard drive solution.
LaCie is a great company. This is a big drive with a small form factor. It is also very stable. This drive supports the 3 most popular methods of interface, USB/FireWire 400/800. A Mac and PC user needs all three to be most efficient. None of the 3 ports require wall power or secondary power to spin the drive. Who could ask for anything more? Amazon offers the best price for this drive. You can stop looking....more info
  • Almost Perfect
This is an effective, convenient and rugged plug-and-play device that, once the originally drive formatting is done in Mac or PC, doesn't require extra software to run: excellent! Usefully, it allows you to assign up to 32 GB of drive space for a different type of operating system (e.g. Mac or PC), an exchange drive partition, whichever one is not your main computer. I'm not clear exactly why the entire drive can't just be 'doubly assigned' in such a manner, but I assume there are technical limitations. While the drive is very good and reliable, the main issue I've had is an error message sometimes when I try to put files on the 'exchange' drive, such a movie clip. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this error since other files with the same extension will work fine. Also be sure to plug it into a powered USB port, i.e. not the one on your keyboard, which won't work. Other than those minor issues, it's a really excellent product! ...more info
  • Great Drive, One Problem
I love this drive and it hasn't failed on me yet. I have been using it with time machine, and they work together flawlessly. The price for the drive was a very, very, very good deal compared with other products and sites. I do have one negative thing to say, and that is that the drive looks small in the pictures, it's hard to tell the size because there is no item to compare it to. So it was a little bit larger than I thought it would be when I bought it. Even though the size is larger than I thought it would be it weighs less than I thought it would. Buy this drive!
P.S. I love how it has the versatility to switch between USB 2.0, Firewire 400, and Firewire 800....more info
